Chocolate and maltaroma. Sweet flavor with chocolate and raisin. Raisinny aftertaste with some cacao. Nice beer, but a bit too sweet.

“Aldersbacher Kloster Dunkel“, 5,3 %, vom Faß im Gasthof Mayerhofer, Aldersbach. - Kastanienrotbraun, klar. - Unauffällige Nase. - Antrunk mild dunkelmalzig, leicht gebranntes Malz wie für bairische Dunkle üblich, angenehme milde Malzbittere. Dezente Karamelsüße; leichte fruchtige Note (Johannisbeere). Gut rezent, beinahe vollmundig, angenehm trocken. Im Abgang nur sehr milde hopfenwürzige Herbe (Hallertauer). - Recht angenehmes Dunkles, könnte aber für meinen Geschmack etwas weniger Frucht und dafür mehr Hopfen vertragen.

Draught at The Ave, 1/14/17.
Dark mahogany with ebony tones, high clarity and a light tan head atop showing moderate retention.
Lots of chocolate and caramel in the nose signifies it’s going to be quite malty. Very light minerality, hints of roast, vanilla and a bit of stale coffee-like oxidation. Not much balance, being basically all base malt-driven with no hop notes or any other acidity to speak of (no dark fruit, melanoidins, etc...). No alcohol noted.
Sweet, rather insipid and not overly balanced. Caramel is sticky and dominant, with vanilla, chocolate and moderate oxidation lingering on the finish. Some light roast attempts to balance but fails miserably. Too sweet, stale and rather lifeless, to boot.
