This year’s Vintage Ale is the 21st edition of our limited edition brew and, like any great 21st, we’ve celebrated in style. The 2017 recipe has been created by our new Head Brewer, Georgina Young, and, in the spirit of all things new, uses a malt and hop combination never seen before in a Fuller’s beer.
The Denali hop has a big, inviting aroma that imparts pineapple, citrus and pine notes – perfect for bringing a tropical touch to the Vintage Ale series. It’s been used here both late in the boil and for dry hopping, dovetailing with classic British hop varieties Target and Goldings.
We’ve also used a new malting barley this year – a British variety called Laureate. New varieties don’t come along very often, so we thought it fitting to use one this year alongside our new American hop.
As with every Vintage Ale, it’s a special beer inside and out, perfect as a gift or to add to your collection.

Bottle #063044 from Waitrose, Bracknell. My 5000th English beer rating. A brilliant crystal-clear copper-coloured pour with light champagne-like carbonation and a ring of cream head; aroma of crystalised fruit and crystal malts; smooth and fruity in the mouth, with an array of fruits - apricot, sultanas, ginger - before a dry malty caramel body emerges; there's then some spicy bitterness; and a long warming gingery finish. The best vintage I've tasted for ages.

No 134278. From Johns. Pours a reddish amber color with a small white head. A big malty cherry nose. Big fruity flavors, more cherry, toffee, burnt caramel, chocolate. Lovely. Smooth. So mellow and so good as always. Class.

No. 25124 which I usually cellar for many years before rating, but this time... let's try it fresh. Clean amber colour with a creamy light-beige head, good stay and some creamy lacing. Aromas of rich caramel at first with dark fruits notes that come out. This one shows a little more hoppiness than previous. The flavours is quite mild on the rich dark fruits and light bitterness happens in the end. I guess, it is just well-blended, but this brew goes down very nicely. Got one more to cellar though and see if it has changed... in the future.

500 ml bottle, at Amundsen, Oslo. Served too warm. Deep golden colour, white head. Malty and vinous aroma, also moderate hops. Rich malty flavour with notes of raisins, noticeable Denali and Golding hops, some bitterness from the Target hops. Will probably mature nicely in the years to come.
