Fonio Rising Pale Ale is the result of years of experimentation by our James Beard Award-winning Brewmaster, Garrett Oliver. Fonio, known as the “Seed of the Universe,” has been a staple in West Africa for over 5,000 years. It thrives without the need for fertilizers, chemicals, or irrigation, making it an ideal crop for sustainable farming. Fonio also provides critical income to smallholder farmers, many of whom are women.

“Fonio is one of the most exciting ingredients I’ve encountered in my 35 years of brewing,” says Garrett. “Not only does it offer a unique, tropical flavor that shines in Fonio Rising, but it also brings a deep, meaningful connection to the land and people who grow it. With this beer joining our year-round lineup, fonio’s potential as a crop and a brewing ingredient is finally reaching the mainstream.”

Brewed with a blend of two-row pale malt, fonio, and dry-hopped with Strata and Citra hops, Fonio Rising Pale Ale is a hoppy pale ale bursting with tropical passionfruit and citrus flavors. It’s the perfect beer for any occasion, with a snappy, refreshing finish that pairs beautifully with grilled seafood, spicy dishes, and fish tacos

Fresh sixer from Total Wine in Orlando while in town for a work trip. Drank 5 fresh but this one came home with me & sat in the fridge for a bit. BB: 8/31/25, originally crushed the first week of May.

Mojito glass at home for this one. Clear, oily, medium gold, sticky & lingering pillowy head.
Lemon, onion, white pepper, dry wheat nose.
Grassy, herbal, acidic, bright. Astringent, medicinal & citrusy hops with a lemony, Sorachi Ace sort of flavor.
Thin, acidy, constant medium carb, feels a touch stronger than the 5% list. Feels like a low-calorie alternative.

Curing world hunger, one fat man's beer at a time.

This gold colored beer has grainy, somewhat citrusy aroma. The flavor is of grainy malt, mild to moderate hops bitterness, and some citrus notes. It kind of tastes like a pilsner with some pale ale characteristics.

12 oz. can from Total Wine. Pours a crystal clear pale gold color with a white head and good retention. Good lacing. Juicy and hoppy aroma. The taste follows the nose, with light juicy notes up front and light hoppy notes in the finish. Like a NEIPA lite. Light, thin body. Medium carbonation. Light, mellow bitterness. Decent for the style. Not too fruity or bitter.

Aroma is bready, peppery—not very aromatic. Taste is moderately bitter with crisp, clean hoppy flavors. Finishes fairly dry. Crushable.

Pale, almost bright, thin head. This is ricey, light, stone fruit and melon hops. Light body. Moderate bitterness. It’s fine…if you want to make a sourish rice pale that’s marginally okay. Not sure why there's 2 of these in the db but I had the 5% one.

Glad Brooklyn is experimenting with alternate grains, but there’s not much here beyond the initial berry-citrus fruitiness. Finishes very bubbly but bland, with lingering yeast and fruit notes in the fade. Eh.

Smell of malt, hay. Hazy golden colour, creamy white head. Aroma of sweet malt, some grass and earth. Medium sweet, lightly bitter. Soft carbon. Very pleasant.
