The Hopfish - a brilliant little thing. Catch one and reminisce about the classic days of IPAs fortified by multiple additions of hops and balanced with the residual sweetness of caramel malts. The Hopfish is always ready to take on the harsh conditions of the ever changing beer world.

Bottle from Oak Tree. Pours hazy light amber with some slight beige head. Aroma is mild roast caramel and citrus. Flavor is roast caramel with a fair amount of fruit, floral and maybe resin hop. Definitely dry, and almost astringent. More towards ESB than NW IPA. Pretty good drink.

Darker than pale ale. Smell is unatractive dull hoppy thing. No head an no CO2 visible on pour. On the taste it does have more bubbles than most IPA. Fishy and dull IPA carries over to the taste. Not as over the top as most IPA. I guess its really not on style. probaly should be an APA. linger is medium length IPA medicinal finish.

12 ounce bottle from Ye Olde Spirit Shoppe in Frederick, MD, opened 1/10/11. Pours a hazy almost murky amber with a medium offwhite creamy head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel, some toastiness, earthy hops. The the taste is caramel, tart fruit notes, and a bitter leafy hop finish. Medium bodied. Meh.

12oz bottle pours clear copper with weak tan head. The aroma of bitter spicy hops, some grapefruit, orange peel, pine resin and earthiness creating a slightly moldy citrus like sensation. The taste is a pleasing mix of grapefruit citrus, spicy hops, earthy hops and a modest level of malt sweetness. The degree of hop bitterness exceeds the hop flavor by a pretty good margin. This is a different IPA hop bill than I’m used to but it comes across nice and fairly hoppy for a NE brewed beer.

Bottle: Poured an amber color ale with a large foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of Noble hops mix with some citrus notes is quite refreshing and provide the impression of a Belgian IPA. Taste is also a great mix between some slightly sweet malt notes with little caramel notes and a unique mix between some Noble Hops and West Coast hops bring a nice floral tone with some citrus and dry notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. I though this was a great refreshing beer under the sun.

Crisp light copper coloured body with a honey glow and a very thin, fast-dying tan head. Aroma of light hops, honeysuckle, malt and a bunch of sugars - not much dry hopping! Light-bodied; Nice mellow grassy and floral hop notes in the taste with a good malt backbone and a very sweet honey flavour throughout. Aftertaste only slightly bitter, with more hop flavours noticeable at the end, and a good complex rounded taste. Overall, a good IPA, not stellar, but not showing any bad flavours or many super hoppy ones either. I sampled this 12 ounce botlte purchased from Liquor Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 11-July-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 17-July-2010.

Not much going on with this IPA (IPA? Really?). Some light floral and citrus hops but low bitterness and not much flavor. A higher hoped golden ale is what this is closer to being in my opinion. Still, there is nothing wrong with it. It drinks easy, is refreshing, and seems well brewed- it just doesn’t fit in with the IPA crowd.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Gilly's, 1/12/10

Aroma: A little bit of citrus and some corn, not much else
Appearance: Pours a clear, dark golden color with a wispy white head
Flavor: Light sweet citrus malt flavor, just a small touch of hop bitterness
Palate: This one is crisp and clean, and fairly light in body
Overall Impression: Felt more like a Pale Ale to me then an IPA. Not a bad beer, the aroma is pretty lacking though. I found the hop profile lacking as well. The score would be a bit higher if this wasn't called an IPA. It works better as a Pale Ale, but as an IPA, the hop profile is definitely lacking.

12 oz bottle courtesy of Thaichile. Pour is golden orange with a nice settling 3 inch off white head. Head falls slowly to reveal pretty lacing. Quite a few visible carbonation bubbles. Aroma of sweet malt and orange citrus hop. Nice inter play between malt and hop on the nose. Nice grassy earthiness present underneath the initial smell. Taste is more earthly sweet biscuit than orange citrus hops, but they are both there. The finish is long, grassy, with minerals and bitterness. Palate is medium body, with not much carbonation. Nice IPA. Thanks Mark.
