Warning! Early amateur rating! On tap at the Sun Inn, Kelvedon. Dark and smoky beer but not bitter. Quite a thin palate. Very subtle fruit. Quite drinkable.

Cask at the Queen’s Head, Chelmsford, Essex on 27th Aug 2008. Dark mild ale with a grassy and smoky aroma, taking the tastebud through a rounded blend of malt and hop to a dry, slightly smoky bitter finish. Very flavoursome indeed for a mild of such a low strength.

Cask gravity at Ealing BF 2008. Really looking forward to this. Very dark brown with thin beige head. Oxidised. Flat. No condition. Over vented. Really watery and just poor.

[cask at the North Wiltshire Beer Festival]. Rich, oaky, surprisingly dry aftertaste, a very good if slightly unusual mild.

(Cask at Wenlock Arm, London, 4 Aug) Colour is almost black with ruby hints, foamy off-white head. Nose is malty and fruity with notes of berries (blueberries, blackberries and cherries). Taste is malty with wild berries (blackberries, blueberries, raspberries), some chocolate and a modest hoppy bitterness in the finish. Very tasty mild.

Cask at Merton Beer Festival July 7th, 8th 2006. As milds go this was a typical of the style, absolutely fine in every way but lacking a bit of individual character. Very dark brown with brown frothy head, good roasted notes and some bitter chocolate flavours pushing through. A bit thin and a touch sweet and the least impressive of the three milds on offer.
