Bottle from Beer Ritz, Leeds. Shared with Slothez. Deep dark brown pour with a small tan head. Tropical fruit and juicy hops ahoy in the nose. Some cracking hoppage and citrus on offer in the flavour too, balanced out by some roast, dark choc and a wee lick of booze. Delicious and superbly drinkable stuff. The Kernel marches on....

Bottle from Bottle Shop Canterbury. Now I was one of the first to embrace this style but also one of the first to fall out of love with it. There was just too much going on. A lack of harmony. So I approach this beer with a levep of scepticism. Black looking beer with thick dark beige head. A good lokking beer no doubt. Citrusy hops on the aroma are aluring. Yes well the malt is not the roasted variety that some have usex and it is without doubt a tasty beer and pushed back a certain amount of my prejudice. Its smooth with just a dash of ash. Its good. Yes a hoppy what? A hoppy dark ale? Smooth hoppy and rather good.

330ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a medium head. Aroma is juicy, guava, mango and papaya. Some coffee too. Taste has some watery coffee to start. Bitter mango. Faint bitter coffee on the aftertaste.

14/I/2012 - 33cl bottle @ RBBWG 2012 - BB: n/a (2012-50) Thanks to Antoine for bringing the bottle!
Pretty cloudy caramel coloured beer, small beige head, unstable, bit adhesive. Aroma: cheesy, stinky feet, sweet fruits, overripe fruits, some pineapple, pepper. MF: soft to no carbon, full body. Taste: pretty sour start, lemony, pineapple, lychee, ripe banana. Aftertaste: passion fruits, some pineapple, bitter finish but still fruity. Very nice.

Bottle at home, 12th January 2012. Great hoppy aroma, pine and grapefruit, pours nicely, neat head and good lacing. Taste is punchy and perfect, lots of lingering grapefruit pithe, and piney hops, coffee and bitter chocolate is evident. I was a big fan of the original Black IPA from Kernel, Black 2 was good but lacked the wow factor, Black 3 has this and is back up with the Original

Bottle at Kernel Brewery, Bermondsey, London, 07.01.12 in company of Loz, plus friends (neighbours) Nick, Anna, Barry & Lynn, also Ang, Thomas and then a number of brewers here today. Black maybe not totally black but getting that way, with a filmy head. You get a good rub of citrus across the mouth initially with this beer. Nice bittersweet balance, bit thrusting bitterness and a move towards dryness at the end, but it is the very decent citrus flavours that I like, I mostly get grapefruit but with maybe a slight pithy lemon going on also. Marvellous beer. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov15 3.8

Opaque dark brown beer, bubbly pale tan head. Dry palate with mild carbonation. Robust dark malt, roasty with bitter coffee. Balanced with bitter hops that are both piney and citrus. Bitter grapefruit with a trace of lime. Bitter dry finish with some sublte red fruits and aniseed. Wow! A smack in the chops of a black ipa. A big old beer this, unsubtle but hugely enjoyable. Looking forward to seeing how this develops.

Bottle at the Kernel Brewery. It pours very dark brown, with a big beige head. The nose is sweet caramel, treacle, pine and roasted malt. The taste is caramel, coffee liqueur, syrup, pine, roasted malt, toast, burnt wood, pepper, tar and alcohol warmth, with a bitter-sweet finish. Medium-full body, moderate carbonation and slightly syrupy mouth-feel. Tasty.

Bottle at the brewery, London. Pours black-brown with a foamy, off-white head. Earth, pine and light roast in the aroma. Medium sweet flavor, strong grassy hops, charred malt roastiness. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Good condition. Dry, dirty hop finish, char, pine, grass, some citrus. Very good. Some woody earth lingers. Good stuff.
