Cask. A pitch black beer with a thin brown head. The aroma has notes of malt, chocolate, and coffee, as well as lighter notes of caramel and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of roasted malt that lends it a bit of acidity and a dry finish, but also with notes of coffee and chocolate.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 27 Nov 2009) Pitch black colour with frothy, pale brown head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of chocolate, black coffee and slightly vinous hints of alcohol. Malty, roasted taste with dark chocolate, strong black coffee, prunes, raisins, cocoa and liquorice. Slightly vinous and warming finish with a decent coffee/cocoa bitterness. Full body, fairly sweet. Lovely beer - one to sip slowly.

[Cask at the Nag’s Head, Reading] Thought this was a one-off special that I’d somehow managed to miss at the Reading Beer Festival, so was quite astonished to see it rocking up in a Reading pub. Pitch black with a loose brown head and no carbonation. Smooth, thick, oily texture. Aroma and initial flavour of coffee and sweet treacle, with some dry smoke, plums and earth developing. Sweet with a very sticky finish. It’s OK, but for this ABV I’d expect more intense flavours, and it definitely needs something to cut through the syrupiness.

Cask at the Nags Head, Reading. Opaque dark coffee in colour with a ring of head with dark and light coffee highlights; rich deep aroma of coffee and treacle; complex flavour with sweet figs, bitter chocolate and strong coffee all mingling together very well; the finish is light and sweet with well hidden alcohol, and ultimately warming. Excellent.

Cask gravity at Reading BF 09. Beer of the festival for me Black, thick and unctious, thin tan head. Really good. Enormously good. Good hops to balance. Rich tarry dark malts, kinda sweet, just so lovely, really impressed. Very intense dark choc. Swallow and finish are brilliant, really sing. Stands up alongside many a US impy stout and very much in that vein
