Alaskan Baltic Porter is a deep, dense beer with an intricate array of aromas and flavors derived from substantial amounts of specialty malts, dark black cherries and whole gourmet vanilla beans. In order for the British to export their dark ales to the northern ports of the Baltic Sea, they were brewed stronger than normal to endure the long voyage. The extra warmth was welcomed in these countries with harsh winters and a taste for the robust, attributes that also fare well in Alaska.

Bottle with thanks to coyotehunter. Dark brown pour with little head and aromas of chocolate, bananas and cherries. Flavor is like a chocolate covered banana with a hint of cherry and maple syrup sweetness. Like most baltics, it borders on cloying but pulls up just short. Really good stuff....

Surprised to see this at the Co-Op tonight and had to take it home. Bottle poures a clear but dark brown with a deep tan and fine head. Aroma is of brown sugar, vanilla and a bit boozy. Can’t quite pick out the cherries but prominent dark fruit and raisins are noticeable. Flavor is roasty and a bit more smokey and charred than I expected. Actually now that I think of it, I am picking up the flavor that is nearly exactly of the charred oak cubes I have for my Home-brewing. Pretty highly attenuated and the feel is fairly dry and a littel thin. Smooth and soft though with fine subtle carbonation. A woody somewhat ashen trailer. Nice flavors, but left me wishing for something a little more heavy and substantial.

Bottle. 2009. Dark brown beer with a tan head. Rich malt and light roast aroma with light oak. dark fruit and rich toffee/caramel flavor with vanilla, earth, and light chocolate. medium-plus bodied. Dark fruit and rich malt lingers with light vanilla and light chocolate.

Pours nearly black with a ring of dark tan foam - sugary sweet aroma, with strong notes of bourbon, vanilla, cherry, toasted oak - smells more and more like bourbon with each sniff, which is fine by me - initially, the flavor is strong, burnt sugars, and not much else - this is followed by doughy character, light cherry, strong vanilla - some brown sugar, raisins - just the faintest hint of oak, but none of the bourbon the aroma suggests - syrupy sweetness persists throughout, but a moderate bitterness comes through in the finish to try to balance it out, but it arrives a bit too late - some decent flavors going on, but it’s way too sweet.

22 oz bottle. 2009 vintage. Aroma is of fermented cherries, whiskey, vanilla, and brown sugar (apart from the whiskey, just like the label says). The thick head it starts out with turns pretty thin somewhat quickly. Never had a Baltic Porter before. It’s very strange to my taste buds. Never had anything quite like it. I don’t really taste the whiskey, but the other ingredients I spoke of on the label are definitely prominent. Alcohol is very noticeable. Very complex.

Bottle: Poured a light black color porter with a quite large light brown foamy head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of lightly sweet black chocolate is dominant and very enticing. Taste is also dominated by well balanced sweetness with some quality black chocolate notes. It seems almost impossible for some chocolate malt to taste so good and it makes me wonder if some syrup were used. In any cases, this is an incredible treat and something I wish I would have access to. Body is full with some good carbonation and no signs of alcohol.

2008 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a deep brown body and a light brown head on top of that. Dark fruits in the aroma with frozen (chocolate dipped) banana, toffee, chocolate and vanilla. Taste is soil, coffee, dirt, vanilla, chocolate, candi sugar, cotton candy, and woody with a sweet and boozy finish. A bit thin on the mouth with a decently strong alcohol burn.

22 oz bottle courtesy of bvc. 2008 Vintage. It appears that the 2008 is 9.8% ABV. Pour is black with some cordovan redness present, topped with a one inch tan head. Aroma of roasty malt, sweet marshmallow, some leafy tobacco notes and some oaky booziness. Nice nose, though the sweetness is a little odd, as marshmallow is the closest I can come to describing it. Taste is the roasted malt, very much coffee in flavor, behind that is licorice tobacco notes, followed by the sweetness of the nose. The sweetness is more of a vanilla in taste. There is also a brown sugar molasses to the taste beyond vanilla. Some black cherry fruit. The oak woodiness and alcohol heat show up late and linger long into the finish. Palate is medium, some carbonation and as mentioned, lingers with alcohol heat. This should improve with some age, its pretty hot right now. This is a nice sipper, thanks for sending my way Brandon!
