Cask at Euston Tap, London. A golden/amber coloured pour with a medium beige head. Hoppy/fruity aroma. Tastes quite sweet, fruity, rich, caramel, slightly bitter. Quite smooth and easy to drink despite being 8%. Good stuff from Otley.

Cask at the Euston Tap. Clear gold pour with a soft white head. Lots of ripe citrus on the nose. Flavor is very juicy, tropical (really!), lots of pineapple, some caramel. Medium in body with soft carbonation. Somewhat warm finish, some honey, sugar, dough, pineapple and citrus hops. Not bad at all.

Cask at the Rake. It pours clear amber with almost no head or carbonation. The nose is wood, leather, varnish and hazelnut. The taste is brown sugar, bread, wood, fig, astringent, weak citrus, leather and very well hidden-alcohol. It is very smooth and has a tangy-bitter finish. It is light and surprisingly bitter for a barley wine. Interesting stuff.

Cask at The Rake. Pours amber with a few white bubbles. Darkish fruit aroma. Flavor is smooth sweet malt with a lot of fruit and a little bitter. Very slight bitter in the finish. A touch woody. And maybe a little toffee.

500ml bottle from The Bottle Shop, Canterbury. Drunk whilst eating Christmas Pudding whilst watching Newcastle Utd go out of the FA Cup to Stevenage. Clear orange copper colour with lasting beige head. Hoppy and spiced aroma. Bit of sweet toffee too. An insanely easy drinking 8% beer. The bottle conditioning has worked really well here. Went really well with the Christmas pud. Spice runs through it, but never over the top. It’s a very decent strong beer with no hint of alcohol burn or anything like that. Very decent.

Light golden-amber. Has a sweet, candyish, vaguely citrusy aroma kind of like Rockets. Sweet. Has some icing sugar character, with lots of candyish fruitness - but on cask this isn’t cloying. It has a sense of balance, maybe from the toasty malts. All the same, the sweetness level is too high for me, which is typical in a pale barley wine.

(Cask, by gravity, at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 29 Nov 2009) Copper colour with brief head. Fruity, malty nose with notes of citrus and apricots. Malty taste with citrus, apricots, lots of malt sweetness and a generous citrussy bitterness in the finish. Full body, fairly sweet. Well balanced barley wine, with a solid malt foundation and a generous hop profile. Very nice and warming beer.

20th May 2008. About 10 weeks passed it BBE date. Amber beer with almost no carbonation. Smooth, almost creamy, malt with some peach and orange fruit. Subtle brandy undertone. Would have been very good with some additional carbonation!

bottle from Bacchus, Crug Hywel/Crickhowell. Deep golden/amber colour, small creamy head. Very fruits nose. Full-bodied, intensively malty with a warming touch of alcohol and lots of fruit flavours such as mango, orange and other tropical fruit. Slightly hoppy with a resiny and herbal character. Lingering finish again with some warming alcohol. Very smooth texture.
