Very dark brown colour. Aroma is a bit woody. Has a dark malt flavour with lingering bitterness from the dark malts.

Cask at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham Green, 12/10/13. Mid black with a good sized frothy tan head. Nose is dark malt, liqourice, dark fruits, toffee. Taste comprises liqourice, light roast, aniseed, jammy fruits, earthy notes, light cocoa, fruity tang. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. Decent mild - well up in the style rankings!

Cask at the Wellington, Birmingham. Pours very dark brown with a small head. Aroma is dark berries, cola and liquorice. Taste has raisin and grapefruit with a mild bitter coffee finish.

On tap somwhere! Clear dark brown beer. Light semi dry palate. A little sourish malt, lightly toasted. Fruit in the undertone. Finishes dry, hoppy and bitter. Tasty if a bit too bitter.

Gravity cask at the Bree Louise, London. Pours clear, ruby-brown with a soft, filmy white head. Perfumey, floral nose with some dark malts. Light sweet flavor, dark malts, some mild burnt wood, ripe citrus. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Light sweet finish, some dry burnt wood and grass, toast, citrus rind. Interesting and decent mild.

Very dark brown. Not a very expressive aroma, but the palate shows more. Soft toffee, some dark malt bitterness. Light body. Lightly smoky finish.

Cask-conditioned at the Crosse Keys (JDW), London 4/02/10. Dark brown with next to no head. Sweet, fruity aroma with a big, citrus hop kick. Flavour was dominated by more orange and grapefruit hops, with a hint of sweet caramel and a slightly resinous, dry finish. Good, but a bit one dimensional for me.

[Cask at the Monk’s Retreat, Reading] Hmmm, seemed more like a stout than a mild to me. Black with slight red glints, and an odd thin but dense yellow-tan head. There’s a tiny hint of carbonation but this fails to hide how thick and viscous this beer is - astonishingly so for the low ABV, it’s like used engine oil! Very smooth, but also coats your mouth a little too much. An earthy English hop bitterness is apparent from the off along with lots of liquorice, plain chocolate, Ribena and cough mixture. It’s quite complex, interesting and powerfully flavoured for a beer of this ABV, but somehow the whole is less than the sum of the parts.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell.A lovely mild. Brownish-black in colour with a thin beige head leaving elegant lacing; strong aroma of chocolate malts; straightforward rich roasted malt flavour - and lots of it - then a sharply bitter finish.

Cask, Ship and Mitre, Liverpool. This really was a pleasant surprise. Deep dark brown, with a decent sized tan head. Nose was roasted malt and dark chocolate with some hops lurking. Flavour was similarly roasty but with a nice level of hoppiness mixed with an unexpected and tasty hit of juicy berry fruit. Great full body and character for a 4.1% beer. A winner.
