I figured a re-rate was deserved here. I rated this a 2.4 back on May 2, 2000. I concerned by that. I do remember drinking this, and I remember that I didn't like it, and even remember Lew Bryson was incredulous at my reaction. And its weird, because I've always loved marzens, and dark german lagers in general and Victory was pretty good at making german lagers of all sorts. Anyway, today I noticed the date of that rating. May 2 2000. So probably I drank an old bottle, at least a few months past its prime. So fast forward 19 years and I sample one from Florida, and it's pretty good. I mean, I still don't think it's a great American take on marzen, and it's not in the Sierra Nevada collab ballpark, but its a perfectly good beer. On to the review. Amber color, malt, some caramel flavors. Light bitterness, just enough to keep it balanced. Somewhat earthy. Here's the original review for posterity A very mediocre beer and my least favorite of the 3 Victory beers I've tried so far. Starts by looking great in the glass - a great ruby red color. But at first whiff, it loses its appeal. Its aroma and flavor are primarily malty, but without character. A slight bitterness appears at the back of the tongue when you swallow it, but again, this bitterness is without character, and aside from this bitterness, the hop presence is just about nil.
