THE UNEXAMINED BEER IS NOT WORTH BREWING

There comes a time in every man’s life when he must ask himself – Should I continue working my steady and lucrative job or should I just quit and make beer? Well, for Norfolk-native Porter Hardy, the decision was a no-brainer. In 2012, the former home-brewer (and now former lawyer) traded his ties in for tap handles, and never looked back. With a stellar team around him, Porter entered un-fermented waters as one of the original craft breweries to set up shop in Hampton Roads.

Ever so slightly hazy golden and straw coloured body with a large, five to six centimetre tall off-white and even tan head that's beautifully microfoamed and stays atop nicely - great looking! Aroma of grass, hay, flowers, yeast, bread and some pungent, bitter hops, all on top of the deep yeast and breadiness in the nose. Medium-bodied; Strong malts show up front with a lot of breadiness and yeastie qualities, then some herbal and grassiness behind, with a good layer of hop bitterness here and some softer sugars on the end that seemingly come from citrus fruits, but also some pure caster sugar. Aftertaste is robust, with a lot derived from the malt and richness that it brings, but a pungent bitterness from the dry and grassy hops, all with a nice blend of sugars from fruits and caster sugar, but the balance throughout is struck very well, especially for the style. Overall, a nice beer for the style and sort of a nice blend of a pure East Coast IPA and a New England IPA and even an older school IPA with a new one. Great to sample super fresh and locally! I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Trader Joe's in Arlington (Clarendon), Virginia on 23-August-2021 for US$3,50 sampled at my house here in Washington on 09-September-2021.
