Description
The brewery was established by baron František Ringhoffer in 1874. Since the very beginning the brewery has always had a live mascot, a goat behind its fence. The current goat is named Olda and he is actually on the brewery’s employee list.
In March 1999, the merger of Plzeňský Prazdroj, as with Pivovar Radegast, as the former majority owner of the Velké Popovice brewery, took place. Since 2016 it is part of the Asahi Group.
Velkopopovicky Kozel is the most successful Czech export beer according to the sales and is sold in more than 50 European countries and beyond.

Draught. Golden colour, nice creamy head. Aroma is mainly malts, hops and some slight hints of fresh grass. Flavour very much the same. Quite pleasant palate though. Not very interesting, but does it’s work a refreshment.

On tap in a beach bar in Jurmala, Latvia. Golden colour, moderate head. Distinctly malty aroma and flavour with notes of butterscotch (diacetyl). Moderate hops in the finish.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café, Stockholm) Mahogany brown colour with huge, beige head, leaving some lacing. Malty, rather sweet nose with notes of dried fruit, brown sugar, caramel and wort bread. Malty, grainy taste with sweetish notes of brown sugar and dark rye bread. Not very bitter, slightly below medium body, rather sweet. Very tasty considering the low abv. Nice.

Bottled. A golden beer with a nice cream colored head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of hops, but also notes of caramel - very inviting. The flavor is sweet malty with strong notes of hops and caramel, the mouthfeel is very crisp. Towards the end the hops gives it a note of straw to go along with the long lasting bitter finish.

Canned. Pale golden, brief head. Light hay aroma. Sweet with clean hard mouthfeel, faint hay flavour, quick bitter finish. What used to be a fine beer full of character has been turned into a dull industrial lager by the modernizations of the brewery.

One of the oddest ratings I scored ever. Had it draught at a party at my university’s student club. They usually serve just Pilsner Urquell draught, but they also had this on yesterday. Poured a nice dark (almost black) red colour, with a thick, creamy medium sized beige head that went away slowly. The aroma was pleasant, a sweetish, malty nose with a few hints of hops. The taste was quite one dimensional, but that one dimension was damn pleasant. A soft, sweet malty taste, caramel, hints of hops (Saaz I reckon). Sweetish aftertaste. A lovely light dunkel.
