Our 17th Century brewery is located right in the heart of beautiful Shropshire. Nestled in the small market town of Bishop's Castle, we’re proud to brew our legendary Three Tuns ales from a charming Victorian brewery tower, just a stone’s throw away from English/Welsh border and unspoilt countryside.

It’s 1642 and a half-timbered building is built in Salop Street Bishop’s Castle to brew real ale for the coaching inn next door, the Three Tuns Inn and our real ales come to life for the first time.

The current classic tower brewery with a 10BBL plant was built in 1888. The beers were sold under the name Three Tuns. Brewing ceased in September 2001 due to problems with beer quality due to some equipment needing replacing with brewing being carried out by Hobson's.

in January 2003, our brewery is bought by John Roberts’ Brewing Co.Ltd. - the name of which celebrates our historic association, over about a century, with the Roberts family. Our brewery is fully refurbished, ensuring its brewing future for many years to come.

Tasted on cask at a Wetherspoons in Shrewsbury (Feb 2011). A golden bitter with a white, light head. The aroma and taste lean towards maltiness, comprising nutty and coffee flavours, leading to an oak wood like esters. It has a spicy bitterness with a lingering finish. Considering it is only 3.8% ABV the packs a lot of complex flavours and is an ideal session beer: like so many well crafted UK bitters.

500ml Brown bottle, best before Apr 2012, poured slowly (it’s bottle conditioned) into an Abbot Ale glass tankard in Oct 2011. What a beauty, deep, deep black/dark brown body, only see the ruby red hue it has when held up to a powerful light. The deep rich creamy head of tanned foam sits on top like a huge crown, wonderful to look at. The nose is somewhat subdued at first, but then as it warmed in the tankard I found the smell of a malty fruitcake which has been slightly over cooked and begining to burn. Well that is how I’d can best describe it. The taste wasn’t as burnt, roasted, smooth or rich as the smell suggested, it wasn’t creamy as the head suggested either. It was however heavy in body and certainly warming my insides as I quaffed it at too fast a pace. Hints of ginger seem to make it appear almost hot, but a caramel sweetness calmed it all down a little: interesting and certainly different. The mouth drying brought a hop bitterness and another dimension into the equation. Liquorice flavours appeared once the mouth had dried completely, again adding to the complexity of the tasting. Not sure if my bottle was in good order, but it was a roller coaster of a beer and I’d love another one to see if mine was as it should have been: this review stands until then!

9th Nov 2011: Hand pulled pint in a local pub, a standard UK sleeve being the receptacle. Not as light in colour as it’s bottled version, or so it seemed to me anyway: the same off-white head on top, but lasting longer than my bottle review. A mixed bag of smells; malts and hops combining to produce a pleasing and beery aroma. The flavours were also a good blend of sweetish malts and spicy hops (Goldings and Fuggles I believe). Re-created to taste like a 19th century IPA, wouldn’t know if they’ve got it right or not, but it certainly tastes good! A rural, rustic feel to it with a citrus bittering towards the end of each mouthful. Good character and body, suits the 5.0% ABV it carries: not sure a 19th century IPA would have been this clear to look at, but I liked it in both bottle form and in cask (on more than one occasion).

Cask, handpump at The Plough, Worcester, 17.01.12 in the company of me deal ol’ ma. Black appearance with a beige head of creamy consistency. Roasty with some liquorice, good bitterness and some lovely dark, bitter cocoa, lovely chocolatey flavours, bloody good stout. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov15 3.8

Cask @GBBF 2011. Pours a clear yellow golden color with a small white head. Has a fruity hoppy floral citrus aroma. Fruity malty hoppy bitter citrus flavor. has a fruity malty floral hoppy finish.

Cask @ Volunteer Arms, GBBF 2011. Pours a golden color with a small white head. Has a fruity malty hoppy caramel aroma. Fruity malty caramel flavor. Has a fruity malty caramel finish with hoppy hints in the aftertaste.

Cask at GBBF 2011, Day 2. Pours clear, yellow-gold with a light film for a head. Wet hay and cereal aroma. Light sweet flavor, tangy grains. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Some wood, hard hops, grain and grass to finish. Not too bad.

Cask (handpump) @ GBBF 2011, Great British Beer Festival, Earls Court Exhibition Centre, London, England.Clear medium orange colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted - caramel, fruity, light hoppy, citrus notes. Flavor is moderate sweet and light light bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20110803]
