Description
Bristol born and made to stand out, Butcombe Brewing Co. began life at a time of cultural, social and political change, crafting beer before ‘craft beer’ was even a thing.
You see, at that time, no one was risking it all starting a brewery, making simple, premium, easy-drinking ale. To do so was an act of defiance. Or madness. But, 42 years and a lot of hard graft later, by staying true to our beliefs and Bristolian roots, it looks like owning a resolutely maverick brewing company isn’t such a crazy idea after all. By going against the grain, to work intimately with it, we made our own statement with every pint. And what was true then is just as important today.
Butcombe now produces over 250,000 pints a week from our brewery in Wrington. As times and tastes change, so does our range of beers. Alongside Original, Gold and Rare Breed, you’ll find two craft lagers, Bohemia and Underfall, and two IPAs, Goram and Stateside, plus a range of exciting seasonal and small batch specials.

1/3 pint, cask at Hamilton Hall. Shared with Finn. Wetherspoon Beer Festival, March 24. Bubbly, beige head over a mahogany coloured body, dotted spots on the glass. Quite inviting smell of caramel malts and a grassy scent. Balanced taste profile of herbal hops and caramel malts. Bittersweet ending notes. Clean on the swallow. Easy to drink. Pretty nice. (London, 16.03.2024).

Cask at Picture House, Stafford. Pours “bitter brown” with a small off-white head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly malts with traces of biscuits and caramel. In the mouth it starts off with some sweet malts, but bitterness of traditional hops soon becomes apparent. Some autumn fruits too and later hints of nuts, cherries and alcoholic strength leading to a dry finish. It’s a reasonable old school premium bitter.

[Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading.] A bright copper colour with a ring of translucent head; earthy malt aroma; syrupy in the mouth with some caramel and soft malts; then a touch of spice to finish.
