Description
Bristol born and made to stand out, Butcombe Brewing Co. began life at a time of cultural, social and political change, crafting beer before ‘craft beer’ was even a thing.

You see, at that time, no one was risking it all starting a brewery, making simple, premium, easy-drinking ale. To do so was an act of defiance. Or madness. But, 42 years and a lot of hard graft later, by staying true to our beliefs and Bristolian roots, it looks like owning a resolutely maverick brewing company isn’t such a crazy idea after all. By going against the grain, to work intimately with it, we made our own statement with every pint. And what was true then is just as important today.

Butcombe now produces over 250,000 pints a week from our brewery in Wrington. As times and tastes change, so does our range of beers. Alongside Original, Gold and Rare Breed, you’ll find two craft lagers, Bohemia and Underfall, and two IPAs, Goram and Stateside, plus a range of exciting seasonal and small batch specials.

Keg at The Rising Sun, West Bagborough. Light soapy pale smell. Deep gold look. It's weak as you'd expect but it's alright. Easy drinking but not much joy despite some soapy west coast notes.

Cask at The Bower Inn, Bridgwater. Clear amber-gold. Thin foamy translucent white head. Aroma has light citrus with a slightly vinous edge over bready malts. Flavourwise it's sour - citrusy and vinous.. Underlying honey and fruit sweetness. Light-medium bodied. Soft-average carbonation. Long dry slightly astringent finish. Pleasent if unexciting.

Keg at The Bower Inn, Bridgwater. Clear copper gold. Foamy delicate white head. Aroma has stone fruit and gooseberries. Underlying malty hints. Flavourwise it's got a light bitterness with what I find to be an unpleasant tart edge. Underlying sweet hints and malts. Light-medium bodied. Slick. Soft-flat carbonation. Long dry somewhat astringent finish. Rubbish insipid stuff. Old school brewery failing at a modern beer.

Keg at the Methuen Arms, Corsham. Clear golden-amber with a rapidly diminishing white head. Light tropical fruits, marmalade and grapefruit balanced against a little digestive biscuit and a crisp bitterness. Seemed a tad thin at first but the mouthfeel improves as you drink more. Actually rather enjoyed it - one of the best NA brews I've tried.
