2013 Yellow Wax affair, acquired in a trade and shared at the HUUUUUGE Friday tasting at Bruces pad, 03/01/14. Pitch black with a well appointed dirty tan head. Nose is sweet, bitter chocolate, dark fruit tang, subtle bourbon, chocolate cake mix. Taste comprises rich decadent chocolate goo, bourbon twang but well integrated, rich dark malt, black forest gateau. Full bodied, smooth as, soft carbonation, expertly pitched mouthfeel. Top draw impy, a little too sweet at times but decent none the less.

22 oz. bottle. Clear amber color with spotty lace in a pilsner glass. Aroma of corn, straw and light malt sweetness. Flavor has light yeast with all the above aroma traits. Light in body but thankfully doesn’t get watery. This brew does have a nice crispness and is extremely easy to drink, it doesn’t do it for me but I’m sure lager drinkers will love this.

Mega Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Big cheers to Senior Bois for this treat. Opaque dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is softish and semi dry. Rich dark malt cream and dark chocolate. Lighter coffee cream and a touch of spice. Underneath are bourbon accentuated dark fruits. Rich and sumptuous.

Bottle shared at CBC Clerkenwell - London. Huge thanks to Ryan for hooking us up with this one. Pours clear gold with a creamy, white head. The nose has lots of piss, mango and grapefruit. Medium sweet flavor with big peach, grapefruit, pee, light pine needles, light grass. Medium to full in body with fine, creamy carbonation. Moderately resinous to finish with some sugary bread, more mango, peach, tangerine, pee and grapefruit. Really solid.

2013 bottle, generously shared by C-Dogg at the BIG Friday tasting. It pours opaque black with a small dark tan head. The nose is rich roast, coffee, mild acidity, toasted coconut, juicy dark fruit, berry and even more coffee. The taste is rich-roast, juicy berry, fudge, creamy, treacle, molasses, chocolate, wood and a good deal of vanilla with a bitter-sweet finish. Medium body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Big, rich and oily. Smooth, slick and well-integrated. Nice.

Bottle shared in London during the First Tasting of the New Year. Big thanks to C-Train. Pours oily black-brown with a thick, creamy brown head. Looks good. The nose has rich chocolate, mild roast, raisins. Medium to big sweet flavor, lots of oily chocolate, buckets of molasses, iodine, chocolate cake. Full bodied with fine carbonation and creamy texture. Lightly warming to finish with sticky sugars, more molasses, syrupy chocolate, burnt marshmallows, black urbanites, raisins. Decadent. Deep. Great beer.

22oz bomber. Unfiltered orange-tan body. Foamy, steady white head. Medium bodied, but with a massive solid hop bill. Dryish amarillo-ish strawy tones at first. Some orange, mellow tangerine, a hint of melon in the aroma. The tropical tones comes out the more you sip at it. Some pungent mango, guava, pink grapefruit start to show up. Pretty much all a beer enthusiast could ask for in a Pale Ale in late 2013. Clean malt backbone and a hefty new school hop barrage. Great stuff.

Purchased at Steve’s Wines in Madison, WI; enjoyed during a band practice, straight from bottle. Appearance (for what I poured for my friends) was a lightly cloudy gold with a rich white head. Aroma mostly of lager yeast, light bread. Taste was also yeasty, with a light hop profile. Nothing mind blowing, but solid.

22oz bomber. Unfiltered grayed orange-tan body. Frothy, glass lacing white head. Delicate, but full of new school hoppy nuances. Pink grapefruit, tangerine, apricot, garlic, green onion. Zesty, grassy, tropical feel. A lot of hop depth. Clean, straightforward malt bill lets the hops shine, second half of the bomber was a little yeastier. World Class all the way, one of the best APAs I’ve ever had. Not unlike Zombie Dust and All Day IPA in its fantastic balance, and this has that sublime NZ hop thing going on, in a big way. Great beer, very grateful to Ryan for making the run and scooping this up after they sold out around town instantaneously.
