Description
Kompaan had humble beginnings, with just a few recipes and a whole lot of gusto. The brewery was founded by Jeroen and Jasper, two school friends that have known each other longer than not. They shared a zest for life and were ready to put The Hague on the craft beer map. The brewery name is based on this friendship, two companions drinking together. As a modern, young brewery making contemporary, exciting beers, the name is spelt in modern Dutch, as “kompaan”, and not “compaen”.

0.44 l can from 'Mr. Hop', best before December 2025. Slightly hazy, dark reddish amber with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, quite smoky, gently yeasty-spicy aroma of smoked ham, overripe banana, toasted nuts, dark honey, some caramel and traces of raisins. Quite sweet, malty, moderately bitter, rather smoky, gently yeasty-spicy taste of caramel, dark honey, chocolate, overripe banana, smoked ham, toasted nuts, hints of licorice and traces of clove, followed by a medium long, moderately bitter, a bit dry finish. Medium to full body, smooth and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Very well-balanced and moreish beer, love it.

Bottle shared at home, courtesy of Tomi. Pours a hazy pinkish yellow with a quickly dissipating head. Nose is lactic tartness, guava and watermelon. Taste is moderately tart, fruity, showing guava and it feels like there’s something else in there too (watermelon or kiwi), but apparently there isn’t so who knows. Closes with a refreshing, tart and fruity finish, has a light body and average carbo. Not bad, but doesnt stand out in any way either.

Bottle shared with Undos and Gábor Gabor, courtesy of markoijelena. Mahogany pour with an off-white head. Nose is candi sugar, esters, nuts, a spicy ginger touch and rum and oak. Taste is also nicely balanced between the base beer, the ginger and barrel notes. Closes with a long lasting, slightly spicy, oaky, boozy and sweet malty finish, it has a medium to full body and soft to average carbonation. Tasty, works much more than I would’ve thought!
