Description
In the early 1900's St. Petersburg was known as "the Green Bench City". At their height some 2,500 benches lined the downtown sidewalks inviting passers-by to slow their pace and make friends of strangers. In the same way Green Bench beer will serve as a catalyst for community and cheer. People will gather around a pint (or two) to share in both good times and bad, to discuss business or tell a joke, to reminisce about life or dream about the future, to get up and dance to the music or to just sit back, relax, and enjoy the brew.

11.2 oz. bottle, pours a deep dark brown / near-black with a tiny beige head. Aroma exquisitely showcases the rum barrels, with deep brown sugar, molasses, toffee, and dark dried fruits. Flavour is likewise remarkably elegant and complex, with deep dark dried fruits, brown sugar, molasses, big boozy rum barrels, and toffee. The huge rum barrel presence cut down on the sweetness. Wonderfully integrated and expressive of the rum. Lovely.

330mL bottle, pours an opaque, dull orange with a small white head. Aroma is rather dirty, with a very filthy yeastiness that dominates. Flavour is vile, with a truly putrid yeast character that must be revealing some sort phenolic or other infection. Completely undrinkable, awful garbage. Something went way wrong here.

330mL bottle, pours a deep dark amber brown with a huge beige head. Nose has a wonderful leathery character, earthy saison yeast, and light bugginess. Flavour is much the same, with burnt malts, leather, saison yeast, and some bugs. Dark saisons/table beers are a hard thing to do, but they nailed this. Very good yeast profile and dark malts combine well. Great.

330mL bottle, pours jet black with a small dark brown head. Aroma is full of super rich bourbon, deep roasted malt, some dark chocolate undertones, and oak. Flavour is remarkably rich, with intense bourbon, beautiful dark sugar, vanilla, cocoa, and a touch of sticky toffee. Wonderful malt base, remarkable barrel character. Beauty.

On tap at Green Bench, pours a clear pale golden blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out tons of complex bugginess, crisp apple skins, some gentle vinous character, and oak. Flavour is likewise complex and well-crafted, with lots of wild yeast, gentle apple skins, oak, and a touch of vinous character. Dry, funky, vinous, and apple-y in wonderful cohesion. Excellent.

On tap at Green Bench, pours a deep dark mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma has gentle coffee upfront, with light earthiness and some toasted malt. Flavour has a rather vegetal coffee character, with very light, flimsy malts. Sure, it’s a dry stout, but I want more malt and more coffee in my coffee stouts, and less vegetal character. Not bad, but far from optimal.

On tap at Green Bench, pours a clear blonde with a small white head. Nose has sweet melony hops, some citrus, some pine, and crisp biscuity malt. Flavour has a nice melony hop character, with piney, some light dankness, and crisp biscuity malt. Good hop expression, though not exactly typical for NZ hops. Good balance, good construction; solid.
