Pours hazy blonde, small white head. Smell is mild tropical, rather green hops. Decent intensity. Taste is sharp, full, hazy hoppyness but a more crisp bitterness to it. Pretty good !

Draft glass @ CML Original. Very dark brown, lovely solid creamy deep mocha head. Nose is milk chocolate, low powdery, sweet cacao, milk chocolate, faint liquorice, perfect touch, mocha, faint hops. This beer is all lightly powdery mocha, sweet milk chocolate, chocolate milk powder, faintest sweet sugar coffee, very faint roast, very low blue cheese hop in the finish, hop & roast is very low mainly its this ridiculously drinkable milk chocolate / chocolate milk profile. Really easy to drink, lightly sweetish, really pleasant brew. Top 3 most interesting new Belgian breweries together with Totem & Préaris boutique beers.

Rotting brown lemon taste, spoiled rotting, massive butter, raspberry, spoiled strawberry,... Far too spoiled, spoiled fruit, soap & butter body. Real mess, this didn’t go right.

As Italia Freschezza at La Tana, the beer restaurant which originally commissioned this beer. Medium thick, light greyish beige, moussy, stable head, very dark chestnut brown robe, blackish in general appearance. Aroma of a lot of grapefruit peel, pink pepper, walnut, dried sage, leather, pine resin, coffee grounds - typical BIPA without any Belgian trait to it. Fruitiness of dark berries and fig in the onset, touch of unripe pear, medium carbo, nutty malt core, heavily toasted towards the end as is to be expected from a BIPA, supporting a wave of piney and grapefruity, aromatic, spicy, drying, resinous hop bitterness, very long and pleasant. Very internationally oriented, ’clean’ and generously hoppy Cascadian dark ale - and the first in this style I have at session strength. Very interesting.

Brussels has acquired a vibrant beer scene in recent years - like most other modern cities I suppose - and this new, enthusiastic brewing project is a good illustration of how these new Brussels-based craft brewers more and more depart from the Belgian clichés. This is an ’internationally’ conceived IPA, tasted from tap at Moeder Lambic Fontainas. Very thick, frothy, dense, beaten egg-like, snow white head leaving an intricate pattern of papery lacing around the glass; straw blonde robe, medium hazy, on the pale side for the style. Aroma is dominated by ’new’ hoppiness, but not in the most elegant way imaginable: suffering a bit from a stale urine-like odour as a result, while other impressions include moldy lemon peel, dough, white bread, fermenting pear juice, light passion fruit, pineapple juice, dried mango, green kiwi, apple. Fruity onset with impressions of passion fruit, pineapple, green banana and lime with an apple-ish touch, soft body yet initially quite sharply carbonated, smooth and slick; lightly bready middle, a tad grainy, leading up to a hoppy finish, with retronasal mango, pink grapefruit and passion fruit, while that urine-like aspect fortunately does not return anymore at least not at full force - in all, this tastes a lot better than it smells. The hop bitterness remains mild and aromatic, but adequately bittering, just not in a harsh way, as is the intention in most present-day IPAs that are conscious of what is happening internationally with this style. Elegant, too bad for that urine thing, but tastes pleasant enough, I can see myself drinking this on the terrace outside MLF for hours on end if it were a summer’s day.

Pours nearly black, smell is creamy, dark malts. Taste is coffee, roasted malts. Bit bitter, Roasty character. Rather thin MF though. Can use more density and more aromahops. Berhaps a bit more sweetness too, just to balance things out.
