Keg at the brewery, 29/03/14. Hazed chestnut brown with a moderate light beige covering. Nose is subtle beechwood smoke, toffee, light hops, earthy pangs, biscuit, dark fruit peel. Taste comprises brown bread, subtle smoke, ripe fruit, caramel, hint of cocoa, more beechwood charring. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Solid smoked affair, nice balance, never OTT.

Keg at Cask Pub and Kitchen, Pimlico, London. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Roasty, malty, chocolate aroma. Tastes roasty, malty, chocolate, coffee, rich, slight bitterness and this medicinal thing going on too. Still a decent porter though.

Bottle at Bruce’s Birthday bash. It pours deep ruby with a medium beige head. The nose is smoke, roasted malt, toast and earth. The taste is earthy, toast, smoke, umami, medicinal notes, light caramel and earth. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Smooth and well-rounded. Nice.

Bottle at Bruce’s Birthday batch @Craft Islington. It pours faintly hazy golden with a small, bubbly white head. The nose is earthy, dirt, musty, light sulphur and orange peel. The taste is earthy, dusty, stewed orange, grapefruit, mandarin, resin and peppery spice with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Could be a bit cleaner and well-rounded. Not up to the level of rest of the Bermondsey IPAs...

Bottle at Bruce’s Birthday batch @Craft Islington. It pours darkest brown/nr black with a decent tan head. The nose is roasty, coffee, cocoa, earth, brown bread and coffee cake. The taste is rich, toasty, roasted malt, dark chocolate, nice bitterness, coffee, mild acidity, pepper and milk chocolate with a dry, roasty finish. Fulsome body and moderate carbonation. Well rounded and pretty flavoursome. Good stuff.

Opaque dark brown beer, good cream coloured head. Nose contains light smoke and lactose - malt. Palate is light and semi dry. Mild crispness. Mellow malt with touches of caramel and lactose. Nice mild dried fruits and light smoke. Dry finish reveals dry malt cream. Comes together well.

Bottle at home in London - picked up at the brewery. Pours deep black-brown with a thick, luscious beige cream head. Great aroma, choc full of well roasted malts, baking cocoa, charcoal, scorched earth. Medium sweet flavor with lots of velvety chocolate from the heavily-roasted malts, some dried dark fruits, raisins and prunes, some hard water minerality, restrained earthy bitterness. Medium bodied with fine, massaging carbonation and wonderfully creamy texture. Great balance to finish, more smooth chocolate, a touch of bittersweet baking cocoa, ash, hints of coffee grounds, dirt and burnt marshmallows. Exceptional stuff.

Bottle at home in London - picked up at the brewery. Pours hazy, dark golden-amber with a huge, frothy off-white head. Lots of leafy hops and dirty pine in the nose. Medium sweet flavor with hefty earthy bitterness, dry bread, light dry orange rind, dirty grass. Medium bodied with lively carbonation. Lots of dirty, raw hop bitterness to finish, some burnt grass, lots more earth, light resinous and dirty pine, dry toasted bread, grains. Needs some work.
