On tap at Eni-Bru. Ore no Kuro 2014 - black of mine porter - a hoppy porter brewed by the ex-manager of 2nd Vine who is now at Johana Beer. I am hoping that means they will improve. 6.5% a cola brown pour with a wisp of a light beige head. A bit of a medicinal seeming fruity hop nose with savoury chocolate malts. Medium bodied with a slightly rough mouthfeel. The taste isn’t as complex as the nose roasty coffee & chocolate plus medicinal fruity hops with a slightly more bitter finish than the wind valley Kuro black IPA. Not bad, better than I expected.

Apparently the Masaji beer was an imperial brown ale while the recipe has now changed and it is now a straight up IPA. 7% it pours a nice gold with a juicy fruity aroma with a bit of musty earthiness. The taste is a clean green earthy bitterness, simple & sweet - overall kind of average but for Johana a pleasant surprise.

On tap at the Craft Beer Picnic in Osaka. Earl Grey 5.5%- it pours a cloudy straw gold with a foamy white fluffy head. The aroma is a floral Earl Grey, a bit gimmicky but nice. The taste is sweet, earl grey, a bit malty, a touch of sugar & a hint of lemon. Really well done, you’d honestly thick taste-aroma wise this was a cup of iced earl grey with a wedge of lemon and a bit of sugar syrup. The sweetness does get a bit cloying after awhile...

Tap at 23 Craft Beers, Nagoya. Amber-orange color, small white head. Strong tropical fruity aroma, lots of passion fruits. Light-bodied to medium-bodied. Flavor has also lots of passion fruits. Also citrus peel and strawberries. Almost a lady drink.

Tap at Kyoto Craft Beer Fest. There have been many different IPAs or IPA-type beers from this brewery, and it is hard to sort them out, but this clearly was the best to date. Deep golden colored, relying on hop fragrance more than bitterness or caramel malt flavors, a more modern-type beer with nice citrus and lightly tropical hop fragrance and good balance, nothing off, not overly sweet. A noticeable improvement.

med amber color. Moderate hoppiness but over all boring IPA, though apparently at one point it was considered Amber. Truly they don’t know what They are doing.

On tap at Bungalow. A cloudy straw gold pour with a solid head of foam. A big lemony aroma that brought thoughts of lemon meringue pies to my head. A light body with a really tart lemon flavor with some sugary sweetness. The taste matches the nose this is lemon pie all the way. Too much lemon for me though it is one of Johana’s better brews as it has no off flavors it just needs more malts to balance things out a bit.

From the cask at BBS 2014. Golden yellow, low head. Very fruity nose, oranges and muscat. Crisp and hoppy, nicely bitter. Well done.

600 yen (200ml) on tap at Craftheads. 5% A clear gold with a thick foamy white head with great staying power the nose is sweet & tea like the taste is a sugary tea, tasty enough but not at all beer like. Sweet, Darjeeling tea, candy sugar a hint of cardboard. I guess weird beers are the niche Johana is trying to carve out. Interesting, too sweet though it gets somewhat cloying. Ok I guess.
