On tap at CBM Jimbocho. Golden orange color with a modest off-white head. Fairly malt-forward aromas with a hint of pine and resin with some stone fruit noticeable as well. Kind of dusty on the palate. Lightly bitter and grassy as well. Dry finish. Just OK. --- Beer merged from original tick of Hakama Ale on 05 Jun 2015 at 23:13 - Score: 5

Tap at BBS 2015. Orange-amber, hazy, with lace. Fruity meaty malt nose, peaches, biscuits. Smooth and balanced, good fruit, nice bitterness, silky body. Well done. Best in a while from Johana.

On tap at Beer Stand Hop. 5% It pours a pinkish orange with a reddish white head - it looks more like a fruit cocktail than a beer. Zesty fruity orange aroma but slightly soda like. The taste is sweet blood orange a bit artificial but has a dry finish that keeps it from being cloying. Not at all beer like but a pleasing enough tipple.

Tap at Bungalow. PRetty, deep blond with a high fine head. Nice lemony nose, biscuits, sweet lemon candy. Thin body, though, with a prickly finish. Nice nose and good hops but the body and malts are a bit too light. Pretty enjoyable, though.

Small draft pour at Ant N Bee. Clear straw yellow with off-white head. Aromas of tea, lemons, light herbs. Tastes of tea, lemons, herbs, sugar. Light almost watery body with a semi-dry finish. Straight up tastes like tea.

On tap at the Kyoto Craft Beer Festival 2012. 16 IBUs 4.5% Rating from my notes this was just a brown-gold pour with a slight foamy head, the flavor was off but not terribly so with a grainy nutty character. Sub-standard.

On tap at Eni-Bru. Ore no Kuro 2014 - black of mine porter - a hoppy porter brewed by the ex-manager of 2nd Vine who is now at Johana Beer. I am hoping that means they will improve. 6.5% a cola brown pour with a wisp of a light beige head. A bit of a medicinal seeming fruity hop nose with savoury chocolate malts. Medium bodied with a slightly rough mouthfeel. The taste isn’t as complex as the nose roasty coffee & chocolate plus medicinal fruity hops with a slightly more bitter finish than the wind valley Kuro black IPA. Not bad, better than I expected.

Apparently the Masaji beer was an imperial brown ale while the recipe has now changed and it is now a straight up IPA. 7% it pours a nice gold with a juicy fruity aroma with a bit of musty earthiness. The taste is a clean green earthy bitterness, simple & sweet - overall kind of average but for Johana a pleasant surprise.

On tap at the Craft Beer Picnic in Osaka. Earl Grey 5.5%- it pours a cloudy straw gold with a foamy white fluffy head. The aroma is a floral Earl Grey, a bit gimmicky but nice. The taste is sweet, earl grey, a bit malty, a touch of sugar & a hint of lemon. Really well done, you’d honestly thick taste-aroma wise this was a cup of iced earl grey with a wedge of lemon and a bit of sugar syrup. The sweetness does get a bit cloying after awhile...
