Description
The Gueuzerie Tilquin began operations in February 2009. It was 12 years that a new gueuze-producer had emerged in Brabant (the previous was Geuzestekerij De Cam in Gooik, which began in 1997).

The Gueuzerie Tilquin is the first gueuze blendery in Wallonia. The company is located in Bierghes (Rebecq), 200 meters from the linguistic border, and is directed by Pierre Tilquin. Pierre is bio-engineer and holder of a PhD in statistical genetics. He then followed an intensive course in brewing science in Leuven, and he had his experience at the brewery Huyghe (Melle), 3 Fonteinen (Beersel) and Cantillon (Anderlecht).

Pours a clear, slightly darker blonde with a medium foam of medium low stability. Scent is very full and robust, mineral, tocuh smokey almost (oak char?), woody and brett. Taste is full, very brett and funk forward, but also woody. Medium acidity. Very dry. Citrussy acidity, which is a great balance towards all the more 'heavy' aroma's, it's lifting up the geuze to be a bit more fresh. Medium body with a high (slightly too high for me) carbonation. Overall, a pretty damn solid geuze - but (appart from the cool concept!) not going beyond that. For my personal taste slightly to dry as well - but than again some others will love it exactly because of this.

375mL bottled 1/16/2024, drunk 7/18/25.
Clear, warm-hued copper-amber-peach. Small, neat, off-white head.
Fruity, bretty, lightly apple-y nose is round, gently oaky, not aggressive at all, with light malt and wheat and a hint of sweet caramel. Little bit of horsey/manure funk in there, too!
Bretty fruits and good acidity with gentle oak, light lactic acidity, no acetic. Good maltiness, soft, chewy wheat, light sweetness. Mild funk, with a tangy, zesty acidity lingering. Very round, mild, approachable stuff. Surprised it's 6.8%. Drinks much lighter (though is fairly malty). Wouldn't hate a bit more funk and raw mineral character, but that's always going to be the case with lambics.

Bottle from the Ermitage shop opposite the Loon Factory. Soft haze on a dark chestnut brown. Beautiful glossy topped lasting beige foam. Boss. Nose has swift earthy coffee bean on top of dark chocolate funky vinous gueuze. Some light oak and fruity twang. Drinks perilously easy and really smooth. Gets a bit juicy and more funky as it goes along. High class.

0.75l bottle at Bastion, courtesy of Lively Marko I think who shared it with Mijardo the Nocilep and me, enormous thanks! Hazy pale orange body, didn't note the head. Some hay, wood, grapes, light raisins, dried apricot in the minerally, mildly funky aroma. Lean, dry, sour-juicy taste, dried apricots mostly, nicely dried out. Simple but classy! The winner for others, Roussanne won out for me, by a hair.

0.75l bottle at Bastion, courtesy of Tomo Š I reckon, huge thanks! With Mijardo the Nocilep and Lively Marko. Murky darker salmon body, didn't note the head. Brett, lighter than in the Roussanne in the sweetish aroma, raisins, bit leathery, vague glue, otherwise nicely funky. Lean, juicy taste, balanced, raisins, creamy, bit minerally, lightly tart, vaguely acetic. Not the most attractive grape profile, we all agreed the pale varieties won that night. But nice, very nice!
