Description
The Gueuzerie Tilquin began operations in February 2009. It was 12 years that a new gueuze-producer had emerged in Brabant (the previous was Geuzestekerij De Cam in Gooik, which began in 1997).

The Gueuzerie Tilquin is the first gueuze blendery in Wallonia. The company is located in Bierghes (Rebecq), 200 meters from the linguistic border, and is directed by Pierre Tilquin. Pierre is bio-engineer and holder of a PhD in statistical genetics. He then followed an intensive course in brewing science in Leuven, and he had his experience at the brewery Huyghe (Melle), 3 Fonteinen (Beersel) and Cantillon (Anderlecht).

Small, pale-pink head over veiled foxy-orange beer, lively carbonated. A 'foxy'nose, indeed as pelt; fruity, red/pink fruit or berries, and indeed like wild fruit - as lingonberries (which are called "fox berries" in Dutch), and something as lightly cinnamoned cookies. Quite acidic, if with a 'wild' flavour, almost bitterish, thanks to the lingons. Lactic, light-lemony, faraway barnyard flavours, white pepper. And raspberry-ish. Very spritzy, light body txs to acidthinning, dry-out effect. Excellent - original. This fruit just loves the lambic.

Thanks to Sergiy for spotting this one for me! Hazy mid-amber sort of colour, with medium head. Typical gueuze. Lots of leather, super dry, oaky, wheaty, lemony, and each of these is pretty powerful as well. Assertive, leaning towards tartness, great bugs. Nice, solid gueuze.

Bouteille 37.5cl, BB 18/05/2027.

Draught at Lauter, smallish bubbly head, light hazy pale pink colour, aroma of minerals, sewer, almond and a hint of cherry, medium strong lactic sourness with a bit of citrus, slight cherries and a bit of almonds and cherries. Very nice and highly enjoyable.

750 mL bottle. Pours dark brown, with a small, tan head. The nose is dried limes, cardamom, musty leather, cranberry, bread crumbs, and straw. Dry and malty, with an easy, musty tartness. Medium body, sharp, and astringent. Funky, strange, and quite tasty.

The 'meerts' version of Tilquin's Pêche Jaune, coming from the second Meerts box he has released so far - in a clever way of recycling ingredients and getting the geeks like me to essentially buy the same basic product twice, although I hasten to add that this is all too cynical a way to look at it, because most of these Meerts editions so far have been very good to excellent. Quite thick and fluffy, egg-white, moussey, slowly breaking and eventually dissolving head on a hazy warm peach (sic) blonde colour with pale orangey tinge. Aroma of indeed ripe yellow peach, even a whiff of canned peach, wood sorrel, mandarin, dried lemon peel, old wood, dry hay, raw rhubarb, green apple, apricot chutney, dried moss, old stable, funky hint of old dried mushrooms in the background. Tart onset but in a very rich, radiant and 'malse' way, utterly fruity to even fruit-juicy, brimming with yellow peach indeed but also containing green plum, cucumber, green apple and lime - a spring-like burst of sunshine in your mouth really. Moderately yet adequately carbonated, smooth body; soft cereally base under lactic fruit-yoghurtiness and loads of actual fruit, tart but with a slight sweet core as well, which is one aspect of what makes these peach and apricot lambics in general often so great in my opinion. Ongoing yellow fruitiness and natural lambic esteriness kept interesting by funky accents of dry hay, old bookd and old dried mushroom as well as a soft woodiness, though the tannic effects here remain more limited than I was expecting (probably because peach kernels and peels play less of a role here than in the regular version). Oddly but beautifully ends like it began, closing the circle: radiantly fruity, 'sunny', gentle and elegant, bursting with fruity juiciness - and sheer joy. What a gem - I am even inclined to rate this 'Meerts derivative' higher than the regular yellow peach lambic. I absolutely adore peach lambics when done like this - a stark contrast with the original 'pêche' from the eighties (as in Lindemans Pêcheresse, for example)...

Pours a clear blonde, medium sized, yet stable white head. Scent is full, earthy grape character, but surely fruity as well, bit floral even. Mild lambic aroma underneath. Taste is Surprisingly tart, higher acidity than expected. Milder in fruits (still pretty fruitforward) than the aroma sugests. Floral has the uperhand, rather than the earthtyness that took the lead in the aroma. Quite balanced. Nothing exceptionally great to my taste, but as far as balance and character go, this is a really good one !
