A Little of Austria, a lot of Vermont

Welcome to von Trapp Brewing

Enjoy flavorful, crisp lagers at von Trapp Brewing, located at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont.

Over the course of many visits to Austria, Johannes von Trapp, the youngest son of Maria and the Baron, gained an appreciation for the crisp, clean Austrian lager beers. When the craft beer movement in the United States gained momentum in the early 1990s, there was a noticeable lack of focus on lagers. It’s not surprising, considering that lagers are more challenging to brew, take longer to mature, and are therefore more expensive to create. For two decades Johannes dreamed of building an Austrian-style brewery at the Trapp Family Lodge, and in 2010 that dream came to fruition.

A humble brewery with the capacity of 2,000 barrels per year attracted attention under the name Trapp Lager, and the brewery received requests from all over the United States. The von Trapp family, who had always been reticent to commercialize their family heritage, realized that they had a product deserving of the family name. The new facility, completed in 2015 under the name von Trapp Brewing, allowed the family to expand beyond their home territory and spread the gospel of craft lagers.

Can best before 7/25/26, drunk 4/13/26.
Smells very malty, as a helles should. Herbal hops are aromatic but not acidic (no big pepper, or dried herb, just light and airy). Light bread and a bit of appley yeast. Seems to dry out on the finish. Crisp, clean.
More flavorful than aromatic, as vT usually is. Excellent hop character up front gives just enough acidity before retreating to the honey and cookie-like maltiness. Rich and sweet but drying out to leave a crisp finish. Very balanced, flavorful, refreshing. Love the maltiness here.

Draught at Khyber: pours gold with a white head. Aroma is bready and herbs. Taste is lightly bitter, bready. Really hits the nail on the head with style.

Solid helles. Very crisp. Pours golden with decent head. Snappy finish. A hint of mercury. Tap at Beer Run.

Pint can. Pours an 18k gold color with a medium sized white head that soon fades to a fine scum. The aroma is very mild with floral and malts. The taste is malts forward with a full-on bready character. In addition to the bready character I get some mild spicy noble hops, a touch of caramel and some grass. The palate is malts forward and the carbonation is soft. Finishes with a big bready aftertaste. Overall: This is really outstanding--the best lager I have had in quite a while. I really must go back (to the store) and get some more cans. Paired with some red dragon cheese, but this did not really go well.

Can to lager glass.
Appearance: copper color with a three finger white foamy head which took it's time to dissipate and once it did light messy lace formed
Aroma: citrusy, floral and piney sweet and bitter hops play with a light bready malt base
Flavor: wraps up the previously noted aromas to a keen crisp sweet & bitter toned quality; finishes crisp, clean and bittersweet with a touch more piney-ness than the floral & citrusy qualities
Texture: light to medium bodied, sessionable, pretty smooth along the tongue as the hops seem to play it cool and more or less just slide off as the beer gets sipped
Overall: I believe this was the start of IPL's for Von Trapp and it wasn't end of Von Trapp doing them. I would come back to this if they brought this back but part of me thinks this may have been used to do in a re-creation in the "Cellar Series: West Coast Pils."

Can to lager glass.
Appearance: copper color with a sly transparency about near the sides of the glass with a three and a half fingers of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: citrusy and piney hops up front with a malty backbone
Flavor: meshes the prior noted aromas to a sweet to bittersweet well ratio-ed hops to malts quality; brisk finish of some citrusy to piney hop tones
Texture: light to medium bodied, sessionable, even-keeled smoothness balancing some hop bitterness trying to scrape the tongue but those malts do some good blocking there
Overall: nicely done IPL worth coming back to.

Can to becher glass.
Appearance: dark brown close to black in color with a finger's worth of khaki foamy head which dissipated at it's own pace to leave some light lace
Aroma: light black coffee notes with some sweet earthy tones, light notes of sweet grains, light dark chocolate? Hmmm...somewhat, yeah that's a stretch but maybe.
Flavor: meshes the prior noted aromas to a fine roasty to sweet quality underscored by a light bitterness; finishes semi-dry with a clean bready tone now coming in
Texture: medium bodied, sessionable; good smoothness with a light dryness about it
Overall: to me, I'd say it's a nicely done dark lager well worthy of returning to.

Can to stange glass.
Appearance: glossy pale yellow color with a three finger white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: floral to earthy hop notes, wet grains/cereal notes and some subtle woody spices
Flavor: meshes the prior noted aromas to subtle zesty to light floral spicy tone with a light malty backing; finishes semi-dry with a touch pushy sweet grains
Texture: light to medium bodied, sessionable, some smoothness and the dry hopping does enact a sort of light chalkiness - I mostly accepted this and wasn't too distracted but I get how many others might think the dry hopping was overly done
Overall: to me, I liked this beer as I have had many other beers where the dry hopping was overly done.

Can to weizen glass.
Appearance: golden yellow/copper color with a subtle cloudiness but also not so cloudy; three finger white foamy head which took it's time to dissipate then leave some light lace
Aroma: some hefe features of the "banana, clove & sweet wheaty" whiffs but then a great backing of citrusy to piney hops with some hop oils
Flavor: though oddly combined, I believe I get what's going on and see how well this does blend the "hefe" features with those hops; finishes dry with some of hop bitterness, a touch of the hop oils and a little bit of sweet wheat
Texture: light to medium bodied, sessionable - somewhat; some smoothness but there's no wheat kick but I believe I get that and am okay without it.
Overall: the very first time I had this I thought it wasn't very good but the second time I had it about a week later, I got what was going on and realized what I was dealing with so after the second time I realized I would come back to this beer.
