A Little of Austria, a lot of Vermont

Welcome to von Trapp Brewing

Enjoy flavorful, crisp lagers at von Trapp Brewing, located at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont.

Over the course of many visits to Austria, Johannes von Trapp, the youngest son of Maria and the Baron, gained an appreciation for the crisp, clean Austrian lager beers. When the craft beer movement in the United States gained momentum in the early 1990s, there was a noticeable lack of focus on lagers. It’s not surprising, considering that lagers are more challenging to brew, take longer to mature, and are therefore more expensive to create. For two decades Johannes dreamed of building an Austrian-style brewery at the Trapp Family Lodge, and in 2010 that dream came to fruition.

A humble brewery with the capacity of 2,000 barrels per year attracted attention under the name Trapp Lager, and the brewery received requests from all over the United States. The von Trapp family, who had always been reticent to commercialize their family heritage, realized that they had a product deserving of the family name. The new facility, completed in 2015 under the name von Trapp Brewing, allowed the family to expand beyond their home territory and spread the gospel of craft lagers.

13 oz. draft. Littleton Freehouse. Aroma is soft honey grain and light yeast. Flavor has the honey, mild white bready malt. with a steady amount of herb bitterness. Good mouthfeel with a good body and light crisp finish.

My 20th von Trapp beer rating. 16 ounce can from Pinocchio’s in Media, PA. Honey gold color. Fluffy white head. Bready malt aroma has a hint of honeysuckle. Flavor is sweet malt and herbal hops. Notes of honey and cut grass. Some minerality and spiciness as well. Wonderful balance and flavor. An excellent example of the Dortmunder style.

Pour is a darker gold with a large white head. Aroma is biscuit malt with also a bit of honey malt. Flavor is bready and dry with a little sweetness on the back end with a thicker than usual for the style mouthfeel. This was pretty good but the only negative and it is minor is that there was not much of a hop presence.

Best by May 18th 2025.

Pours dark brown with reddish highlights, over a finger of off white foam.

Smell is some roasted malt, light grain, some aromas of hop and chocolate bitterness.

The taste is roasty, dark chocolate, not much sweetness, hoppy bitterness with some infused by the chocolate.

Medium bodied, good carbonation.
Excellent Black Lager!
