Description
After years of hobby brewing and an increasingly ardent interest in brewing as a profession — including countless brewery tours and immersion in local and online brewing interest groups — John Martin and fellow home brewer and co-founder Ken Broadhead launched Confluence Brewing in 2012. John left his construction management day-job to pursue Confluence and his passion for beer making full time.

The brewery is itself a confluence of John and Ken’s love for Iowa and craft beer. The result is a microbrewery that shares Iowa’s attributes of honesty, humility, hard work and a sense of humor. Confluence also has Iowa’s knack for being a delightful surprise to those who actually experience it.

Confluence cares about the creativity and craftsmanship that goes into making excellent beer, and knows that excellent beer can bring good friends together.

On tap at Confluence, pours a clear golden with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out fresh piney hops upfront, with light cereal notes, and biscuity malt. Flavour is along the same lines, with lots of earthy, piney hops, and dry bready malt. Clean and surprisingly easy-drinking for a IIPA. Excellent.

On tap at Confluence, pours a murky dark orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out plenty of yeast, dank hops, and some bready caramel. Flavour is on the yeasty side, with earthy hops, some pine, and plenty of yeast soup. Too yeasty for me, but it's competently done.

On tap at Confluence, pours a murky dark amber with a small beige head. Nose is full of hazelnut and coffee, with light bready malt as the base. Flavour is along the same lines, with lots of hazelnut syrup and coffee. Cheap and not really authentic tasting, but inoffensive all the same. Okay.

Draft/Fest. A- Malty, caramel. A- Copper color, clear liquid, off white head. T- Malty, caramel. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, malty finish. O- Weather Beacon Doppel. I took that as a play on words for a Doppler Radar. Probably wrong but hey. I like to overthink things. Pretty boring. Not much going on.

Draft/Fest. A- Bland, grains. A- Gold color, hazy liquid, white head. T- Grains, bland. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, bland finish. O- My wife has a fascination with things blue corn. I guess I tried this for her. It was bland. More than an a pale lager should even be which I would think is hard.

16 oz can from HyVee, Ankeny. So we got a lot of pale lagers from Iowa, so I may not expect a lot. But let’s see. Does smell like a corn adjunct lager, but what would I have expected. At least not too sugary. Pours a slightly hazy yellow color, thin rapidly dwindling head. Taste also has some corn sweetness to it. I’m thinking it could have used some extra hops to counteract the corn. But than again, it actually does have a nice thick mouthfeel. Probably would be the equal of some thick Iowa cut steaks or chops. But yeah, the alcohol can go straight to you.
