Dark amber ale with moka head. Rich malty aroma with good crisp malts. Good rich malts and rich floral hops. Very well balanced and dark IPA which isnt an IPA. Mondial 2005.

2004 bottle at Julio’s Spring Beer Fest, 4/02/05. Deep orange-amber-gold color, with the red hues really coming through quite strongly. Small, but fairly long lasting white head, light lacing, mostly clear body. Aroma of figs, bitter oranges, that strange Rapscallion yeast (sort of a spolied fruit meets a piece of old steak, mixed with doughy sourdough bread). A bit of caramel and almost mint in the nose as well. Flavor begins with the pervasive bittersweet yeast, not quite sour, but not terribly thick with malt. Fruitiness for sure, with some caramelized sugar meets chocolate. . .and then it’s all enveloped in a massive wet sourdough flavor, with traces of alcohol on the end. Body is only medium and seems a bit too loose as it warms and breathes. Peppery carbonation initially.

2004 bottle aged some 6 or so months. Pours a robust orange-golden, with gold-leaf tinges and a foamy off-white head. Good lacing and moderate retention, receding to cover at last. Slightly hazy, small amount of sediment in the bottom. Aroma has tons of bready yeast mixed with caramel covered oranges and juicy, pine and resin hops (though it is not hugely bitter). Thick, but not over-the-top sugariness is apparent in the aroma as well. Flavor begins with sweet orange, light caramel and light hops, again more flavorful than they are bitter. Chewy dough and bread, like a salty white bread dough, camp out on the palate, and I can’t really shake that flavor. Very odd beer, little resembling anything else I’ve tried. Medium-full body, residual sugar, strong malt accents and a spice and bread flavor linger on. Moderate, but natural carbonation.

April 2004. Dark copper red ale with an apple puree with cinnamon aroma. Sour, fungal taste, with lactic acidity yet it is very pleasant. Medium bodied. Simple yet interesting.

2004 bottle (Parrish Cafe Boston). Pours a thick looking, moderately wavy/glucose-like yellowish/pale gold with some lighter oranges in there. Little to no head. Served in its own glass. Aroma has hints of candied yellow apples, sweet honey, light peach and nectarine notes and just tons of sugar. True to the aroma, this one is significantly sweet. After trying a bunch of peppery strong goldens, it’s a nice change, but quickly proves to be too much malt. The yeast is light but noticeably belgian. Good zing from the hops half way through, which dont seem to be out of style and then the finish which is floral, lightly sweet and very clean and surprisingly quick. Decent beer, too much fruity/sugary sweetness though, and gets a bit too thin on the end.

A bit darker orangey; very little head, drops dead. Grapes, alcohol, candi sugar, orange rind in the nose. Also a bit meaty, faint whiff of diacetyl. Taste gives orangerind again. Much sweetness present, but absolutely not cloying. There is a hint of something diary-like, but no diacetyl traceable. Orangerind becomes slighte sourish. Not dry, neither. Medium-thick mouthfeel. Alcohol doesn't show. No new taste. Fruity, orangey tones fade out. IMO the least of the Rapscallion range, but still quite good - I can imagine a lot of people would just love it. Really a shame about the head.

Superbly hoppy beer, notably noble hops. Little hints, both on aroma and taste, of blueberry (pie), rest typically pine and cedar, fading to resiny residue. Great!

Very vineous, estery, dark with a reddish shine, a bit of acids... Rodenbach Grand Cru American style? It would but for its dark chocolate overtones - very nice anyway!
