Bottle shared at Leighton’s place, 27/06/2016. Many thanks to Paul. Nice reddy ruby coloured pour with a loose light tan head, frothy. Aroma is sour ,red berries, musty grape, woody and tangy. Flavour is composed of tangy red berries, spicy tangy sour, sweet and sour brown bread. Some musty sourness. Palate is semi sweet and sour, highish carbonation, spritzy.

Bottle at Bespin, thanks to Scopebro, 27/06/16. Clear reddish amber with a decent beige cap. Nose is varnish, spice, nutty, damp wood, peppery spice, tarte red berry. Taste comprises wood must, dank notes, earthy berry linger, funk, sharp berry. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a light acidic bite. Ok.

Bottle shared at LKS. It pours deep brown with a massive light tan head. The aroma is earthy, musty, damp leaves, sweet - sour, dried fruits, tangy berry and farmyard funk. The taste is bitter, earthy, funky, acidic, balsamic vinegar, cranberry, sour dried berry and soil with a dry, woody, leathery finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. It could be a bit smoother I suppose.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Paul. Gushes ever so slightly. Pours clear ruby with a frothy, khaki head. Tangy berries in the nose, light leather, light funk. Lightly sweet, with sturdy acidity, more tangy berries, salty sweat, more leather, light earth. Light to medium bodied with average to lively carbonation. Quenching finish with more acidity, leathery fruits, low bitterness. Quite nice.

Bottle. Pours a hazy yellow golden color with a small white head. Has a fruity malty spicy yeasty aroma. Fruity malty spicy yeasty flavor with weak hints of caramel. Has a fruity malty spicy yeasty finish.

Bottle, courtesy of SinH4. Lots and lots of cherries indeed, but really unlike a lambic. Still sour, but far more tame and soft. Some tartness, no funk. Can’t find the oak aging though. Still a well drinkable beer with a good balance. Nice.

The newest incarnation of Fils à Papa, likely the most exciting beer De Leite has produced so far, this time aged on Bruichladdich barrels. Very thick and frothy, egg-white, irregular, thickly cobweb-lacing head over a hazy golden blonde beer with peachy hue. Complex bouquet of buttermilk, young abbey cheese, sweetened yoghurt, overripe peach, honey, pineapple, freshly cut sorrel, green banana, stale sweat, stewed rhubarb, sour cream, sweet white wine, some clove-like phenols, melting butter, light oak, limoncello, light smoky peat accent but not the amount I would expect from a Bruichladdich-aged beer - but then, this distillery does make a case of departing from the cliché that Islay whisky always has to be peated. Fruity onset, strong gooseberry and yellow passion fruit, hints of banana, ripe plum and pineapple, sweetish and delightfully sourish at the same time, with even a light lemony acidity to it; carbonation is medium, spritzy in a refined way without distracting from the flavor. Supple, lean, lightly oily malt body ensues while these vivid fruity esters continue, and so does the lemony sourness, with a refreshing effect on top of the bready, honeyish malt sweetness, rather than being puckering. Malty finish with ongoing lemony sourness, drying but again, remaining refreshing rather than sharply acid, yoghurty too, some ’wet woodiness’ but modestly so, going along well with the tartness and floral hop bitterness, as well as, eventually, a glow of warming, whisky-like alcohol kept (very) well in position. Interesting beer: the Bruichladdich barrel effect has been kept limited, and apart from a smoky touch in the nose, there is not much ’peatedness’ going on here - fortunately. The basic Belgian tripel character is still dominant, with the ’wild’ effect manifesting itself more in terms of yoghurty and lemony tartness than in terms of whisky or even wood flavor effects. I have enjoyed Bruichladdich on more than one occasion but hadn’t I known this renowned whisky is in here somewhere, I never would have found it. Subtlety is key here - resulting in a very balanced, yet still exciting and colourful beer, which in terms of style, seems to connect with Anglo-Saxon ’sour ales’ very well (if I had to taste this blind, I might just as well associate it with England’s Wild Beer Company or something). I deeply regret not really having followed this series so far, there are so many interesting things to taste these days, but I’ll keep an eye on the name "Fils à Papa" from now on. Never thought De Leite would ever achieve something as accomplished as this.
