About
Brasserie du Bocq was set up in 1858 by Martin Belot. The Brewery was incorporated into a limited company in 1949. Independent of any Belgian or foreign brewer, it still beholds its own family nature. Located in the heart of the Condroz, wonderful tourist region, this dynamic company still uses the traditional manufacturing process of top-fermentation beers with secondary fermentation in the bottle.
In 1983, Brasserie du Bocq abandons the exploitation of Central Brasserie Marbaix -La-Tour, to bring all the beer production back to Purnode where the production tools have been radically modernized on the basis of equity. Today in Purnode, although the Belot family has sold its assets to the Keersmaekers family who has been producing the Corsendonk at the Brasserie du Bocq for over 30 years, and even though the brewery has far exceeded its regional framework, nothing has changed and the values of the company remain intact.

Hazy orange color, medium frothy head. Aroma is sweet, yeasty and fruity, bit hoppy. Taste is sweet bitter and sour alltogether, sticky palate. Nice beer.

Blond color, big head, nice lace. Very nice aroma, sweet, malty, spicy. Good body structure, sweet malt flavor, with orange fruitness and light spices.

Bottled. Very dark brown with beige, creamy head. Roasty aroma with notes of burnt sugar. Medium sweet resiny nose, soft, pleasant mouthfeel and a remarkably dry finish with some grassy bitterness. Really good!

The aroma is sweet and malty. The color is amber and it has a beutiful head. The flavor is of sweet malt with notes of cinnamon.

Dark-brown with reddish shine. Thick, very irregular head with big bubbles. Caramel, mocca, soap, and maybe some malt in the nose. Not roasted, but burnt malt. A meaty taste, like aspic from a meat-pastry. The yeast, no doubt. The 'slight bitterness' is there immediately. Harsh finish, burnt. Medium-bodied. there is a commercial description, bordering on the cynical. It's not really bad.

Bottle-conditioned, Best before end 1999. Cloudy brown color, no head, probably because of its age. Extremely alcoholic nose, wine-like. Sweet taste, very alcoholic, quite complex. Spicy, malty, all together. Not a starter though.

Pale golden beer. Thick white head. Alcohol, chalk & yeasty whilst pouring. Dry, caramelised sugar in the glass. Taste is sugar, caramel-like sweetness. A bit empty - maybe some notes from very ripe pear. Very dry, balanced by a very active carbonation. Little body apparent. A bit of alcohol warming effect. No new aftertaste. I'm still waiting for those hops, as well as the citrus from the label. Oh well, can't ask too much from such a busy brewery for such a big supermarketchain (Du Bocq for GB/Carrefour), no?

Very pale amber with a greenish shine. little, white head. Nose of chaff and scorched sugar. Taste is liquorice, caramelised sugar, Maillard even - in a blonde! I'm not fond of coriandre, but I would have welcomed it, missing everything else. The malt is there, but the sugar makes the mouthfeel empty. Aftertaste is more caramel. The umpteenth labelbeer from du Bocq, probably for the Carrefour supermarketchain. It is impossible to prove, but ?St. Benoit blonde = ?St. Erlin blonde = ?la Gauloise blonde = ?Père Abbé blonde =?; and believe me, it exists in another dozen of names over here. They make money with it - but not good beer.

Dark chestnut colour, slight haze; brownish head, stable. Something buttery in the nose (no diacetyl), dark bread (Maillard?), candi sugar, some hops and ? parsley - butter and parsley, it reminds me of Burgundy snailsauce! Bitter taste of roasted, even burnt malts; there is a malty-sweeter base that the bitterness is capping. There might be hops - but the balance is turned too much to the roasted bitterness. Mouthfeel is quite full-bodied, carbonation is very apparent. The malt sweetness, under the main taste, becomes obvious after a long time, but the burnt flavours keep lingering. I cannot like this overtipped roasted flavour. There is an uneasy near-balance which doesn't satisfy.
