Small-batch strawberry sour ale by this sour specialist in Georgia, apparently from a single barrel but blended with a few others. Rather impractical and exaggeratedly long name - but nice to see a quote from classic Greek theatre show up as a beer name. Tasted from tap at the BeerTemple in Amsterdam during Carnivale Brettanomyces. Moussy, snow white, dense head over a hazy straw blonde beer with greenish hue. Aroma of sherry vinegar, unripe gooseberries (or indeed unripe green strawberries?), redcurrant, fresh sorrel leaves, raw rhubarb, Granny Smith apple peel, sour cream, milk gone sour, dry white wine, soap. Lots of green unripe plum, white grape skin and hard pear peel wryness and tartness in the mouth, citrusy fresh touch of pomelo, more or less fizzy carbo but suitable for this style, refreshing, over a soapy, wheaty backbone with sharper grainy edges; drying tartness increasing in the end, with a very superficially lambic-like funkiness to it, some wet wood tannins as well as fruit skin tannins, dryingly sour and bit powdery yeasty finish. Nice, very quenching and quite complex, pleasantly surprised as I had never heard of this brewery before.

Sour plum saison by a craft brewery in Atlanta, hence the play on the name, now rating from a can from Gedeelde Vreugde but also had it from tap at BeerTemple in Amsterdam during Carnivale Brettanomyces last year. Thick, frothy, audibly crackling, egg-white head fizzing away into a ring of small, loose bubbles after a while, on an initially clear, straw blonde beer with greenish tinge, hazy with sediment, showing a beautiful swirl of lively bubbles. Aroma of plum peel tannins and sour plum juice, jasmin tea and spring blossoms, lavender, sweet cicely, feta, sourdough, gooseberry, chalk. Citric sour onset, lots of sour unripe stonefruit tartness indeed but in a softish way, some light plum peel tannic wryness and a vague, sweeter, apricot-like note; minerally notes, very chalky from beginning to end, with fizzy carbonation and light, lean body. Ongoing sour fruitiness over a clean, bready, soapy basis with that weird, fragrant jasmin- and lavender-like aroma returning retronasally; ends dryish due to the sour factor but in a mellowish way, paired with a light ‘afternote’ of earthy hop bitterishness and that chalk- or even gypsum-like mineral quality lingering on. Berliner Weisse-style modern kettle sour, quite refined, light-footed and elegant.

Bottle. Pours inky black with a small brown head that dissipates to nice residual and good lacing. Aroma is rich bourbon, molasses, hints of vanilla and chocolate, touch of anise and oak. Flavor is medium sweet, medium plus bitter, hot and kind of boozy, bourbon and chocolate liquor. Full body. This is a beer that would have knocked my socks off three years ago, now seems kind of heavy handed and boozy.

Can. An unclear golden beer with a beige head. The aroma has notes of hops, spices, malt, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, alcohol, and spices, leading to a bitter finish.

Bottle@jens - Golden pour with white head. Sweet malty and fruity with notes of grapefruit and peach, some tangerine, sweet caramel malty backbone, hoppy bitter into the close.

Can. A hazy yellow beer with a beige head. The aroma has notes of lemons, straw, spices, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of lemons, spices, straw, and malt, leading to a tart finish.

Can@jens - golden pour with white head. Aroma and taste is tart fruity with notes of plum, some grape, slight sour and acidic, floral hoppy and slight tart fruity into the close.
