Description
The future of beer lies in the past.
Beautifully crafted gluten free beer, expertly brewed from ancient grains & traditional ingredients.
In 1988 Derek Green had a problem. He had to avoid the gluten in barley and wheat, and at that time in the UK- indeed Europe - there was no gluten free beer available. A miserable life without beer lay ahead.
A natural entrepreneur though, he travelled across Europe at the start of the century getting brewery doors slammed in his face. The response was not good. “Too complicated” and “Why bother?” were common refrains.
So began a long process of discussions, meetings, trials, false hopes, and dead end trails. Breweries did not want to know about production that did not exist and one that could not be quantified.
The breakthrough came in 2003 when he met an eminent Belgian professor of brewing whom by coincidence had a daughter who also needed to avoid gluten, and there began a relationship with the mutual goal of brewing a beer made from alternative grains to barley, one that would be naturally gluten and wheat free. After numerous trials, in May 2004 Green’s launched the UK’s first ever naturally gluten free beer from Alternative Grains; named not surprisingly ‘Discovery’.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a super thick looking murkiness and a nice fast-fading tan head. Aroma of pure funk, caramel, raisins, grapes, cola and a tiny bit of spice - not too pleasant. Medium-bodied; Strong sharp maltiness with a twang of metal that can’t be diffused. Aftertaste shows some lighter metallic flavours, blood, malt, figs and some fruits - but basically just a mellowing out of the already pretty bad tastes. Overall, a pretty bad offering - if I had this in a blind tasting, I’d say this is some crummy craft breweries attempt at a nut brown. This thing is really bad - definitely not worth drinking! I sampled this 500 mL bottle purchased at Chevy Chase Wine & Liquors in Washington, D.C. on 03-May-2008, sampled on 07-September-2008.

Rated Aug. 2008. Courtesy of Degarth. Pours deep clear garnet with thin mocha head. The aroma is pungent with bold dark fruity esters, some chemical alcohol notes, licorice and musty dewy fruitiness. The taste is as bold and sweet as the aroma with dark sugar coated fruitiness then becoming somewhat like red wine and tannin dryness. I also get a sugar porridge type sensation that’s mild and muted. Body seems really thin considering the level of sweetness in this beer.

(Bottle 50 cl) Courtesy of oh6gdx. Slightly hazy amber golden with a small off-white head leaving laces. Weird tart and fruity aroma. Light-bodied with oddly synthetic caramel flavours and notes of solvents. 220608

50 cL bottle. Pours hazy orange with a lacing white head. Mild fruity and malt aroma, yet also a bit chemical. Flavour is fruity, peachy and of oranges. Ends with a lingering peachy flavour and a mild bitterness.

Pour is a dark brown with a large tan head. Aroms is lots of vinegar and very red wine like. Flavor is dark malts with a super sourness. Not close to what the style should be as this is way to sour. Again they were practily giving this away at the W&C place in STL for $1.69 so i could not pass it up. If you see this on sale for $5 this is a waste of money.

Pour is a bright golden with a large white head. Aroma is decent with some citrus and spice. Flavor is almost like a cider. Lots of sour apple and cinnamon. Weird for a tripel and nothng something i would think i would ever see in a Belgian. They were almost giving these away at the W&C place in stl so i could not pass it up.

Bottled, thanks oh6gdx! Clear pale golden, brief head. Light grassy nose. Medium sweet and lightly fruity. A dumb standard lager with no character nor bitterness. Well, if they wanted to make a gluten free Heineken they’ve succeeded.
