The darkest Lienne, with a very deep burgundy colour, as good as black, under a thick, frothy, lacing, pale beige head. Aroma very caramelly, in a ’dry’ kind of way, iron but not too disturbing, coffee grounds, raisins, leather, bayleaf and, alas, a faint hint of DMS (cooked cabbage). Dried fruits in the mouth, with only a faint suggestion of raisin sweetness, but not actually becoming sweet anywhere; dryness continues in the middle, with a fairly deep caramelly and nutty maltiness, touch of bitter chocolate, some roasted bitterness but not really coffee-like (unfortunately!), sourish touch and herbal hop bitterishness. Quite enjoyable, doubting a bit between a dry stout and a porter, but like Lienne Brune, it could be better with more body and more ’boldness’ in the roasted department, I think.

Strong dark ale with thick and creamy, moussy, yellowish white head and misty bronze colour. Aroma of peach, caramel, banana, biscuit, red apple; soft fruitiness in the taste, peachy, slight orangey fraîcheur, banana, candi sugary sweetness but not cloying and balanced with a somewhat dull, ’deep’ basic sourishness; somewhat ’fluffy’, smooth mouthfeel but a bit less ’full’ than I had hoped for, bittering toasted malts in the end, herbal hop bitterness and a hint of warming alcohol. In all, well made ’massieve ale’, but needs more body and character to truly distinguish itself.

New Lienne beer with lacing, medium, cream white head and misty yellow colour with slightly greenish hue. Floral hops in the nose, hint of banana ester, white bread, grass, mineral touch; restrained fruity sweetness in the mouth, rather dryish, crisp, with a ’clean’ and supple mouthfeel, smooth, with a fairly long, earthy, leafy, grassy hop bitterness in the finish. Decent and quenching Belgian blonde.
