Description
In 1865, William Moorhouse, a local Burnley lad, founded the brewery. He took great pride in his home town and his craft, originally producing mineral waters. In 1870, he built his own brewery, producing renowned beers, including his low alcohol Hop Bitters for the temperance bars across the North West.
Rejuvenation
Hard times hit in 1985 and Bill Parkinson, a local man passionate about beer, was sipping a pint of Pendle Witches Brew one day, when he heard of the plight of the brewery. He bought it, invested in a new brew plant and the rest is history. With many twists and turns along the way, we have embraced the traditions, values and entrepreneurial spirit of our founder ready for exciting times ahead.

Bottled. Dark pour belies a strangely sugary taste. Then a rather out-of-character smokiness pops in, almost like the smoked cheese taste of an Aecht rauchbier.

Nearly stout-like blackness, with an impressive lacing - peaty aroma - dry, crisp and refreshing - mild chocolate/coffee flavors, and a flavor I can only describe as "creamy smoke," of course that doesn't sound tasty, but really, it is - not a fan of mild ales, but this is pretty decent.

I wouldn't call this strong ale at 5.1%abv, and certainly not judging by its taste. I could almost categorize it as a strong mild. Light and fruity persimmon aroma with citric hints (not hop) of lime and tonic. Some candyish grapey qualities are also apparent in the nose. Cloudy dull orange color with medium, slick body and light finish. Generally a lightly flavored mildly fruity ale with a tinge of indistinct hop flavor. I think of an old-fashioned English session ale.

Mostly what one might expect from a dark mild, but maybe more boring than one might expect as well. Interesting smoky aroma reminiscent of rauchbier, with light notes of sweet malt and caramel. Very dark brown, almost opaque, with no head, only a very thin layer of tight bubbles. Medium smoky flavor with a very lightly bitter aftertaste similar to eating snow. Light and sweet, very low hopping.

The flavour and appearance are similar to that of a stout without any hints of wateryness. Very good beer indeed.

Dark brown; poor head. Some malt and roasted malt aroma, outscored by a nice hop. Light body (light alcohol content), but really good mix of flavors, balance, in which a sharp coffee and roasted malt outstand. A very delicate coffee taste in the palate as well.

Sampled cask conditioned. Copper coloured. Nutty. Light bodied, sweet. Fruity, very distinct roasty flavour. A hint of apples. Medium bitterness. A beer with a lot of personality.

Sampled cask conditioned. Amber coloured. Fruity aroma, light body. Malt accented with sprkling mouthfeel. The finish is slightly salty but not very bitter. An enjoyable traditional cask bitter.

Sweet, but bland. It looks nice, but has a very one-dimensional flavour. There are better dark milds.
