Description
Trappist ale has been brewed at the Abbey of Our Lady of Koningshoeven in Berkel-Enschot since 1884. The monks of the abbey are the origin of this ale. They are popularly called "Trappists", after the origin of their order: the French Soligny-La-Trappe. This order is characterized by austerity, silence and the duty of charity.

Within the abbey walls, Brewery de Koningshoeven produces Dutch Trappist ale. Still under the supervision and responsibility of the monks and still based on the inner conviction "to do good": part of the proceeds go to charities. These original principles provide La Trappe Trappist with the exclusive label "Authentic Trappist Product" from the International Trappist Association.

Between 1969 and 1980 the beers were produced under license by Artois (InBev). By 1999 the monastery had become a subsidery of Bavaria - Netherlands this resulted in La Trappe beers no longer displaying the Authentic Trappist Product label. In 2005 an agreement was reached by which the monks would take a more active part in the brewery operation and so the label was restored.

2017 rating: Slightly aged 0.75l bottle courtesy of Mario M, for my 29th birtrhday a year ago. Slightly hazy golden body, big thick white head. Aroma... full soft maltiness mixing with distinct, even just vaguely fruitily tart apricot jam notes, sweetish and dusty, lightly oxidized Soft, sweet maltiness, with light fruity notes, sugary apricot perhaps. Slightly dusty/oxidated, of course, but pleasant. A solid, pleasant light drinker, didn’t gain much with age, but didn’t lose much either. 7/4/7/4/142005 rating: Finally got to taste this one. Fluffy, rapidly disappearing head. Orange/gold color - looks exactly like honey. Fruity/malty aroma. Tastes great, again, like honey, very malty. Not much hops, but I certainly wasn’t missing them much. Couldn’t detect spices really, but I do have a bit of a cold. Quite good. 7/4/8/4/16

Hazy light golden colour, with big white lasting head. Wheaty aroma with hints of citrus. Has a little spicey wheat taste and a little biter aftertaste. This is not a bad beer.

Slim, yellowish-orange head, fast gone, orange-golden, nearly ochre beer. Grain, and a very, very faint initial whiff of vinegar, later something spicey as preserved ginger and orange peel - or mouldy lemons. Again citrus in the taste, most likely orange zeste again. Hint of acidity, rather citrus than acetic, this time - but that pinch of ginger is still there, as well as some honey. Fizzy MF initially, though no apparent pearling. Falls flat afterwards. Brew seems tired, past its prime, somehow - though not the bottledate. Lightly lightstruck? Not very inspiring, anyway.

Pour is a deep dark almost tan. Nice size white head foams after the pour. Aroma is nice an musty almost like a dry wine. Flavor is sweet, fruity and a dash of honey. Nothing really overpowers though and this one is quite bland. I will still try the dubbel and quad though. The good thing about this brew is the price. Probably the cheapest trappist out there.

Bottle. Amber color with a whitish head. Fruity banana aroma with yeast and malt. Malt, fruit, and big banana flavors. Medium body with a certain smoothness. Some metallic flavors to end with.

Retasted at the abbey on 23/07/05. Much better balance, harsh bitterness all but gone. Brewmaster is very anxious to point out that in his opinion, the beer had to go out of the brewery way too quickly. 2/3 of a year of lagering in the brewery has worked small marvel indeed. Dark brown with some foxy highlights; yellow-brown head, some lace. Cucumber, cinnamon and dark malts, Tensoplast (I think that’s what US raters mean with Band-Aid) in the nose. Initial slight sourishness, woody taste, becoming bitter, very tannine-like. Liquorice, but not sweet. Harsh, burnt, woody, solvent-like bitterness. Becomes indifferent after some time. Well-bodied, filling, stout-like. Unrefined bitterness is a pity. Some American C-hops might have wrought marvels on this one.

2004 bottle. Pours a mild, light chestnut brown with a small off white head. Aroma of light belgian yeast, some dry oak-like notes and a bit of caramel and brown sugar. Flavor is mostly sweet (caramel, brown sugar) with a mild belgian yeast influence, hints of bubblegum and light fruit esters. Palate is fairly smooth, with a soft medium body. Filtered unfortunately. Rating this against brown ales; this is wonderful. Rating this against belgian ales; not so great (though still decent).

New review: Tripel is probably my favorite non-wheat beer style. La Trappe was the first one I’ve tried, and I loved it. Now I’m a bit more experienced when they’re concerned, and I decided to rerate it. This poured a great looking dark orange colour with a nice medium sized head that went away relatively slowly leaving a ring of lacing around the glass. The nose is all peachy Belgian-style-malt, and the taste isn’t much different. Nice and sweet with hints of peaches and dried apricots, some dry background hopiness that moves into the aftertaste. Hints of alcohol and spices. I still like this a lot (and still think that this is underrated), but a bit less than I used to. Oh, yeah, and it’s now available in Croatia too. Wish the Dubbel and Quad were.... Old review: Bottle from El Corte Ingles in Barcelona. Poured a lovely dark orange colour, with a fine head, the taste was fruity, maybe peachy, and it was quite sweet. A very, very, pleasant beer, which is certainly the best I bought while in Spain, and my only mistake was not buying more when I had the chance. Doubt I’ll be seeing this in Croatian stores any time soon (but I certainly hope). (8/5/9/5/18)
