Southwark Brewing Company
Microbrewery
in Bermondsey,
Greater London,
England 🏴
Associated Venue: Southwark Brewing Company
Established in 2014
Over 6 years, we have seen a lot of change and development. The brewery now has 6 fermenting vessels up from the 3 original ones, including a 20 Barrel FV commissioned in February 2020, in advance of a BIG sales drive (that wasn't well timed....)
We have brewed over 100 different beers and we have enjoyed every single one and there are a lot more to come.
Their keg range appears under the name 'Big Bear Brewery'.

Bottle from the brewery and drunk at home. Gold clear bubbly white head. Virtually no condition in the mouth except on the finish. Little bit of lemon and lime on the aroma. Some bitterness on the finish. Kinda got better. It’s ok.

Cask at the brewery taproom - London. Their very first open day. Pours clear amber-gold with a foamy, mostly white head. The nose has lightly doughy malts, hints of caramel and tangerine. Light to medium sweet flavor with mild grain husk, leaf, meringue, dry citrus, creme caramel. Light bodied with fine carbonation and massaging texture; OK condition. Lightly off balance to finish with overly heavy bitterness, some further creamy caramel, ripe citrus, grainy bread. Not bad for a first effort.

Gravity cask at the brewery taproom - London. Pours clear orange with a wimpy, pale froth head. The nose has heavy plastic and soap with accents of grainy malts. Medium sweet flavor, moderately boozy, highly astringent, with more abrasive plastic, overly bitter grass, strong fusel alcohol character, whispers of citrus. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Fairly warming on the finish with more bothersome astringency, tea bag, grass, plastic, raw grains. Very difficult to drink.

Cask at the brewery taproom - London. Pours clear yellow-gold with a frothy, white head. Pale bread on the nose with hints of lemon and straw. Light sweet flavor with crunchy biscuits and bitter grass. Slightly watery. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Simplistic finish with hints of plastic, lemon rind and grass. Subpar.

Cask at the brewery taproom - London. Pours clear, bright yellow with a frothy white head. The nose has rotting lemon and grainy pale malts. Light to medium sweet flavor with more overripe fruits, heavy grassy bitterness, fusel alcohol. Grass, so much grass. Light bodied with soft carbonation; lacks condition. Oily and grassy on the finish, aggressive, abrasive. Tough to drink. There’s lots to improve here.

Gravity dispense at the brewery during my 40th bash, 11/10/14. Clear golden with little in the way of a head. Nose is bready, vanilla, straw, light soap. Taste comprises plastic, straw, soapy twang, lemon rind, light spice, diacetyl strains, green and raw. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close with astringent bitterings. Pretty pap stuff, like it isn’t ready yet or some shit !?

Cask gravity at the brewery. Aroma is hot solvent, plastic, grainy. Flavour is sweet, candy caramel, solvent, plastic, harsh bitterness. Clearish golden orange with no head. Palate is semi sweet, lowish carbonation. Pretty bad. Bit of staling, oxidisation.

Cask handpump at the brewery. Light hazed golden colours with a lasting white creamy head. Aroma is grainy cheesey hop, light tartness. Flavour is cleaning fluid, grainy, biscuit malt. Harsh big bitterness. Out of balanced. Palate is decent cask condition, low carbonation. Not a great beer. Too many IBU s.
