Description
Looking for the real taste of Antwerp? Since 1833, there has been just one address: our Antwerp City Brewery. Because when people get together in Antwerp, they do so more often than not with a Bolleke Koninck in their hand. And that’s how De Koninck has become synonymous with Antwerp –and vice-versa. Every day, we work hard to uphold this proud tradition while also experimenting on ways to perfect and reinvent the taste of Antwerp.

Bottle. Sweet plum aroma. Amber color with moderate head. Sweet raisin flavor up front with moderate tannic flavor. Little body for a tripel. Easy to drink and not unpleasant but not like the other spectacular Belgian tripels.

Bottle. Sweet peach, apple and chocolate aroma. Light yellow color with small head. Sweet apple flavor initially with malty middlle and moderate bitter/astringent finish. Nice but not spectacular.

Tap. Apple vinegar aroma - light yeast and must tones. Cloudy light brown with small head. Very ciderlike inititally with a sweet and sour light malt and bitter finish. Body was a bit weak. Interesting - a bit like a weak Gueuze. Bottle version was much less acidic and lighter as well as being a darker brown.

(Bottle 33 cl) Born as "Cuvée Antwerpen" when this city was the cultural capital of the EU in 1993. Hazy, dark amber - not much head. Very soft mouthfeel, some caramel and spices. And also some typical De Koninck fruitiness. A bit like what you would expect if you took the standard De Konick and added another 3% alcohol. Nice one. 260695

(Bottle 33 cl) Amber-coloured with a quickly fading head that does leave some lacing though. Some impurities afloat in the brew although no bottle fermentation - De Koninck has no real tradition for that. Mostly this beer is just plain sweet - actually way too sweet. The Saazer hops are on a hopeless mission trying to balance out the sugars. Doesn’t remind me of a Tripel at all. Very disappointing De Koninck. 150505

(Bottle 33 cl) Beautiful, clear bronze colour, rather limited head. Typical fruity esters from the ale-yeast and a light sweetish, caramel-like aroma which is perfectly balanced by a prominent bitterness. Medium body and easier to drink than most other heavy Belgian winter/christmas-beers. 240205

(Bottle 25 cl) Beautiful, clear amber with a small head. Caramel notes but dry, not sweet nor bitter. Actually extremely well-balanced. If you want to drink a LOT of beer this is my recommended choice. Although not sophisticated in any way this is so much more satisfying than pils. Try it on tap in the typical "bolleke"-glass. 280993

Nice citrus aroma, excellent creamy head and amber colour. Long flavour finish. This beer was 5 moints over due, but that might be a good thing.

Draught
Copper brown, decent creamy head. Nose is yeasty, hoppy and slightly sweet. Medium-bodied. Good malty backbone, finishes with alcoholic touch. Peach sweetness. Bittersweet aftertaste.

Bottle at the Montreal tasting, 3/6/05. Sharp, dry, astringent yeast nuttiness meets white mushrooms. I’d like to write more about the aroma, but there wasn’t much more to write about. Some grassy, almost earthy bitterness? Certainly no malt. Fairly clear, amber-auburn body, with light copper tinges and a moderate amount of lightly fizzy off-white head. Flavor is dry and severely astringent, with notes of chalk, tin, rust and a strange, lightly sour, regurgitated toffee flavor (sweet bile). Body is a pretty standard medium, with no thinning or wateriness, but after tasting the flavor, it’s a moot point. The carbonation is too rough and disruptive, as well. This stuff will make many drains very happy! (or sad, if your sink has a demanding palate). It’s sad, but this beer would have fit in well at the swill tasting the night before. Oh well, I guess even Belgium has its swill.
