Description
Looking for the real taste of Antwerp? Since 1833, there has been just one address: our Antwerp City Brewery. Because when people get together in Antwerp, they do so more often than not with a Bolleke Koninck in their hand. And that’s how De Koninck has become synonymous with Antwerp –and vice-versa. Every day, we work hard to uphold this proud tradition while also experimenting on ways to perfect and reinvent the taste of Antwerp.

Clear sparkling yellow color, nice medium creamy head, splendid appearance. Aroma is spicy of coriander. Bit sweet taste for a tripel, but nicely balanced. Very drinkable triple indeed.

Very pale amber, crystal-clear; no head, just little white rim - for De Koninck! First impression of rotting vegetables, wocked in sesame/soy oil. Sesame nose, plus a bit of caramel keeps hanging around. Damn! That sesame oil is back in the taste! Plus liquorice and roasted peanuts this time, dissolved in cooking brandy. Quite alcoholic. Body seems thinner than it is. Nice warming throatfeel. My God, what have they done?? The makers of the Beer I used to measure all beers with! O tempora, o mores - I left Antwerpen for one year, and this is the result? New rating 30/03/05 at the brewery. Two different versions, 75cl unpasteurised and 33cl pasteurised Clear pure copper colour, yellow-pink (melon) coloured head. Vegetable nose, again with an oily component, but NOT sesame - and the veggies weren’t rotting this time; sweet malts taste, milky. Fruity, yeasty esters ending in a just sourish edge. Thick, nearly chewt MF, very sweet and un-dry for a tripel, oily. No doubt the effect of the cane-sugar. Please try the 3/4l bottles if you can find them - much better.

Gold-amberish; thin white dense head, fast gone. Nose of freshly cut melon, malt, grassy and some Thai herb. Very malty taste; fine bitter finish (Saazhops obviously). Lemony aroma retronasal, some grapefruit and maybe some melon again. Light to medium-bodied. Long fine bitter aftertaste. Quite fruity (yeast?), surprisingly original. Is this a new beer, will De Koninck tripel be a new beer? Antoon, Cuvée and Begyn are gone anyway. The brewery says yes, of course, I was more sceptical, but I'm beginning to believe them. But will it save De Koninck from the plummeting sales of amber ale?

(draught) Totally clear amber-fox. Thick yellowish head, lacey. Nose of ambrée malts, some sugar and hops, CO2 is even obvious in the nose. A bit of burned rubber (sulphur). Aroma as freshly gristed malt. Taste, IMO, the ideal balance between sweet and bitter from noble hops. CO2 gives an ever so slight sourish hint. Biscuit (cookies) flavour. Very fresh De Koninck has a flavour as from freshly mown grass. Light-bodied. Well saturated, not fizzy. Refreshing. In the aftertaste, all tastes struggle and the hopbitterness lasts. NEVER confound a draught ‘bolleke’ with the bottled product. Filtered, but not pasteurised, this is a mega-difference. NEVER visit Antwerpen without drinking one. Not all pubs serve it equally well, though. To an Antwerpener, this is the standard (=/ the best beer!) by which all other beers are measured.

As i liked the original De Koninck, this one is also very nice. Amber colored, small head. Amber malty aroma, like De Koninck. Also tastes kind of the same, with a small note of alcohol. A bit stronger De Koninck, for the dark months of the year...

Copper coloured. Not much head. Sweet and somewhat yeasty aroma. Quite sweet and a bit fruity flavour with warming alcohol. Drinkable but I've had better Belgians.
