Each Beer has its own name and unique identity; like the people who have inspired them. The brewery is family owned and operated, a proud member of the Oregon Brewers Guild as well as the Pacific Northwest's rich brewing heritage. We produce over 600 barrels of Beer a year in our 4 barrel (120 gallon) Brewhouse and bottle approximately 5000 cases a year. The rest of our beer is served on draft in our tasting room and at a few select accounts in Oregon and elsewhere.
Hair of Dog is proud to be one of the first breweries in America specializing in the production of high alcohol, bottle conditioned beers as well as experimenting with the barrel aging process since 1994. Currently, the brewery has 180 oak barrels used to age Beer from 6 months to 8 years. We use new oak as well as previously filled spirit and wine barrels. All the Beer is made by two Brewers, Denver Bon and Alan Sprints.
We are also dedicated to buying local products for both the Brewery and restaurant in an effort to keep as much of our money in our community. We work directly with farmers whenever possible and are proud to say that 99% of all the ingredients we use are produced within a 350 mile radius of the brewery. Our Organic Pilsner malt is from Gambrinus Malting in British Columbia, the water runs pure from the Cascade mountain range, hops are grown in Oregon and Washington and both bottles and labels are made in Portland. Since we opened all the graphic design has been created by the Felt Hat of Portland. The original brewing equipment has been recycled from other industries and is still in use today. After Brewing all the ingredients are used for animal feed by a local farmer.

Hazy orange with white head, much lacing. Hop aroma with malt notes. Hoppy flavour with a quenching quality, notes of citrus, naartjies?, and malt. Lingering hop finish. Well balanced and seems lower in alcohol than it is.

Hazy orange with a medium lasting off-white to yellow head. Nice floral and citrus aroma, mostly grapefruit. Apples, leather, wood, some wine, even a hint of geuze. Flavour is sweet and doesn’t hide the alcohol, very complex, spicy, port and brandy. Initial fizzyness is soon taken over by a big creamy mouthfeel. The alcohol an sweetness is to overwhelming to make this the favourite it could easily have been.

Hazy orange with a huge and solid white head. Aroma of leather, hay, citrus, grapefruit. Sweet at first until a big grapefruit bitterness sets in. Though it has a fair amount of bitterness it wasn’t the hop explosion I had hoped for.

Bottle (sampled at the Duesseldorf Gathering): Light amber coloured, small lacing off-white head; strong sweet-bitter flavour, light to medium bodied, sticky MF; strong, sweet-bitter, cough-syrup-like finish........

(Bottle 65 cl) Slightly hazy, pale amber with a tall and lively head. Fresh, lightly grapefruitish nose. Medium body with an excessive carbonation. Lightly sweet malt, distinct notes of citrus and a solid bitterness. Not your typical Double IPA. 080107

Poured a deep dark black like a stout, but the head laced like an Imperial IPA and was lasting and foamy. Aroma was awesome, floral, sweet, caramel, licorice, whiskey, grapes and wet tobacco. Flavor was strong. Chocolate at first with a hint of the roasted malt, grapes and coffee. An awesome finish of cherries and raisins with some heat from the alcohol. Great beer. I could have rated it higher, but something this complex could ease on the alcohol just a bit.

An hazy reddish brown ale with a thick off white head. The cap gave way too easily, although there is a fair amount of carbonation left. Some muck covered the cap, ugly and uninviting. The aroma is off-putting, with roses, wet bark, and fungal notes. In mouth, a sweet candy sugar with funkyness, a light sour touch, wood-rot, and warming alcohol. Rich bodied, but something is wrong here, overall. The infamous LCBO private import, Jan 2007. Batch X.

Bottle at the Düsseldorf Gathering. Muddy, amber body. Off-white, fizzy head. Very intense aroma of honey, flowers, vanilla, wine, barrels, orange, ... even somewhat too intense, reminds me in some kind of way also like jam smells. Moderately bitter, moderately sweet flavour. Nice complex flavour of vanilla and fruits, but not overwhelming.

Test vom 7.1.2007, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 10,11,8,10,11,11 - 10,30

Hazy orange golden with fine white thick creamy head. Aroma and taste of Citrus/orange/grape, pine, hops -soap/flowers + yeast. Soft mouthfeel & carbonation. Little malty sweetness that matches fine with the power amount of hops that is used. Again I sense a taste of pepper like the other products I’ve tasted from the brewery. Lasting bitter finish! Numbness from hops! Great! Re-rate summer 16. With Hallinghansen and Mrorla. Sweet malty. Dusty pine. Barley Wine US Strong ale like. 10 years and 15000 beers later this needed a re-rate. 4,0-- 3,4.
