We’ve produced quality beers over the years by challenging and refining our craft, not by appeasing trends. Discerning taste, rolled up sleeves, and upholding our uniquely progressive ideals ensures our drinkers will appreciate Upland beers as much as we do. Many of our brews are unique twists on traditional recipes, while others are creations of our own imaginations. At our brewpubs and tasting rooms in Bloomington, Columbus, Carmel and Indianapolis, flavor, discourse, debate, laughter, and conversation flow as freely as our beer.
Upland Brewing Company was founded in 1997 by Marc Sattinger, Russ Levitt and Dean LaPlante. In 1998, distribution of bottles and kegs began and the brewpub opened its doors. In 2006, ownership changed hands to a group of local investors remains 100% family owned. In 2012, a new brewing facility and bar was opened on the west side of Bloomington which became the primary brewing facility for Upland,
Keg draught at BrewDog Paddington. Reddish brown and clear with a miniscule amount of pinkish/beige head. Soy, sweet balsamic vinegar, some cherry notes, light notes of banana leaf. I tense and complex taste with a serious sourness with more light banana. I've not an idea what paw paw smells or tastes like but I'm guessing it's what imparts the berry-like note in the finish. It comes off a lot like a Flanders Red. Incredible.
Draft pour at Meridian Pint. Poured a dark cola color with a small off-white head. Aroma was roasted malts, big toasty malts. Chocolate. Creamy, with a bold roast finish. Coffee notes.
Can from the guest room at Beer Under Glass. Another recreation of an old brand for which I've never had the original. Let's see. Pours a sudsy foam head over a very pale, clean yellow beer. Some bubbles still at work as I look this over. Light beer nose, though I can smell some of the alcohol made by the corn. Taste is… pretty OK. A bowling beer for sure: light malt, some corn sweetness that just edges out some German-type hops. Thin mouthfeel, but hops in the bubbles make them kind of prickly and ticklish. Wouldn't say no to another.
Pours black with a small tan head. The aroma is full of chocolate with roast malt and coffee. The flavor is sweet and chocolate rich with roast malt, vanilla, and cinnamon. It’s full bodied and a very good dessert beer.
Pours black with a small tan head. It smells of bourbon, roast malt, chocolate, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet and heavy on the bourbon with chocolate, malt, and a little coffee. It’s kind of hot/boozy. There’s a balance where they likely don’t want a sugar bomb, but it’s maybe too far the other way, resulting in a more boozy flavor. It’s still quite good but I suspect it will be even better if it mellows for a while.
Draft. Hazy pink beer with a pink-cream head. Plum and tart aroma. Sour and plum flavor with light spice. Medium bodied. Sourness and plum linger with light spice.
