Description
Barrier Brewing Co. is the collaborative effort of brewers Evan Klein and Craig Frymark, located in Oceanside, NY. Brewing their first batches on a 1bbl system (2 kegs at a time!) in June 2010, the two expanded the business to a 5bbl brewhouse in June 2012 which operated for four short months before being severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy. After several months of rebuilding, Barrier reopened in late-February 2013. The brewery currently produces nearly 50 different beers throughout the year totaling 1500bbl annually, all of which is self-distributed throughout the NY metro area.

Can. A mostly clear foggy beer with a dense beige head of moderate size. Curtains. The aroma has caramel and a touch of bread, some pine cones and resin and a pleasant citrus scent. It's full bodied and softly carbonated, with a good bitterness and a balancing sweetness. Piney, resiny and lightly citrusy hops up front, on a backdrop of bready malts and caramel. Medium length finish. A decent beer indeed, although a bit more malty and sweet for my preference. Nice with something different than NEIPA though. 240807

Can. Outstanding - and this coming from a guy who long ago has been burned out on the imperial stouts. Pours reasonably dark, thick beige head holds on. Nose is rich coffee, bitter chocolate, and roasted malt, and excellent blended together in a nice balance. It all comes together even more so in the flavor, with a light creamy sweetness and full carbonation to hold it up. Its not even too sweet or heavy, its really semi-sweet, balanced with dark chocolate, coffee bitterness, and more roast. Medium to almost heavy bodied. Lingering chocolate flavors lean almost acrid but not quite.
