Description
Our name, Almanac, refers to the Farmer’s Almanac, a seasonality reference guide for farmers that has been published every year in the U.S. since 1818. Our motto, “Farm to Barrel”, was adopted to reflect our passion for brewing bold and sustainably sourced beers. Farm-to-barrel brewing is about selecting the best in sustainably sourced ingredients and using them to create beers inspired by the great brewing traditions of the world. We aim to create something uniquely Northern Californian.

Almanac was founded in 2010 by Damian Fagan and Jesse Friedman, two avid home-brewers who bonded over their mutual appreciation for California farmers markets. They set out to brew beers inspired by California’s rich agricultural bounty. After nearly seven years of partner brewing, we moved into our very own 30,000 square-foot production & aging facility located on a historic naval airbase on Alameda Island in San Francisco Bay.

Craft Clerkenwell tasting. Thanks to Aaron. Hazy gold beer, little white head. Light palate, a little crispy. Strawberries and cream! Light peach and a touch of sherbet and oak. Light dry finish. Great strawberry vibe on this one.

Very slightly hazy golden coloured body with a hint of gold glow and a very thin, half centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of light malt, nuts, earth, yeast and a hint more grass. Light to Medium-bodied; Deep earthy flavour with a lot of malt, some peanuts, a little bitterness and almost no herbal, dry, airy notes nor of any honey sweetness - just perhaps some light cardboardie sugars. Aftertaste shows some bitterness, a hint of alcohol and a lot of earthiness. Overall, this one is drinkable, but isn’t a saison at all and doesn’t show any honey flavours whatsoever. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Tustin, California on 02-May-2013 for US$2.99 sampled at home in Washington on 09-July-2013.

Bottle shared at CBC Clerkenwell - London. Many thanks to Aaron for bringing this along. Pours hazy gold with a foamy white head. Moderate sharp tangy lemon in the nose, light funk. Mellow sweet flavor with dry strawberries, light dough. Light bodied with average, massaging carbonation. Clean finish, moderately tangy, some sweat, strawberry seeds. Very tasty stuff.

Aroma is slightly acidic with a balanced barnyard funk as well. The beer is rather fruity as well with the strawberries being more prevalent than the nectarines. The strawberries do have a touch of a plastic character but not as bad as other strawberry beers. Faint nectarine notes. Pours a slightly cloudy gold with a medium thickness white head that steadily recedes leaving no lacing. Flavor starts with a hint of sweet malt but is quickly washed away by a refreshing tartness. The flavor has a nice vinous quality mid palate with notes of wine and oak. The finish is fruity with faint strawberry and moderate nectarine notes which help balance the acidity. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. There is a low acidic astringency and the alcohol warmth is low as well. The beer is a bit sticky but the acidity helps wash that away. Overall another very nice beer from Almanac. Their Farmer’s Reserve series is really nice and well made. I am continually impressed by these beers, though my expectations were low after years of crap. Who knew good beers could come out of Hermitage.

Pours a pale yellow. Very light in color. Mild haze, but it might have just been a good pour. Small white head, somewhat rocky. Decent retention and a tiny bit of lacing. The aroma is dominated by spicy citrus. The citron comes through strong, and you get a heavy dose of that citrus rind flavor. It’s such a sharp note that it reminds of the fresh ginger in Farmer’s Reserve #2. The Cara Cara oranges come through as well with that berry-ish orange flavor. The Meyer lemon is a bit more in the background, but it’s there if you look for it. The flavor just seems a tad delicate against the citron and Cara Cara. There’s a definite lactic sourness in the mix, as well. Some mild funk. No real malt presence. The taste is a blend of sourness, funk and citrus. Very nice combination. There’s a touch of cheesiness to the funk, particularly in the finish, but otherwise, this is the cleanest of the Farmer’s Reserve series, so far. Bright, refreshing sour citrus flavor. Some more of that spicy rind flavor, but more of the Meyer and Cara Cara delicacy shines through in the taste. Lasting lemon, orange, berry finish with some firm acidic sourness. Very light malt that’s kept well in the background. Mouthfeel is light and lively. This is really good stuff. It’s great to see Almanac improve with this line of sours, and it’s even better to see them improve within the line. I’m very much looking forward to more.

Pours a pale orange-ish gold. Quite cloudy. Solid head. Lots of fine white bubbles. Very good retention with some nice lacing. Aroma is sweet strawberry jam with some background barrel flavor, lightly buttery oak and some deeper grapey-ness. Strawberries seem to be a hard fruit to use in sours. They seem to contribute a rubbery/plasticky touch, and while it’s present in this beer, it’s minimal and handled well against the flavors contributed from the wine barrel. There’s a touch of light funk, as well. The taste is light to medium tart. There’s a little bit of strawberry sweetness up front, but it fades out, and the finish is tart and moderately dry. Lots of strawberry flavor. A touch of that rubber flavor, mostly in the finish, and it kinda fades in and out, much less than some strawberry sours that I’ve tried. The barrel seems to contribute some light vinous flavor, some blackberry/raspberry and mild oak. Very solid taste. A little bit of body, though it’s generally light and lively. Medium pucker - pretty firm sourness in the back of the throat. Almanac continues to impress me with their Farmer’s Reserve sours. I’m looking forward to more.
