Description
Established 1666 - Closed 1989 - Re-established 2010 - Re-named 2022

One of the greatest names in British brewing, Truman's has been a part of London life for almost 350 years. Closed in 1989 during dark days for the brewing industry, we have been working hard to bring Truman's back to its former glory. We craft an eclectic range of great beer in cask, keg and can at our new brewery in Hackney Wick. Everything we brew, we do with with skill, belief and passion.

The brewery in Hackney Wick was closed in June 2022 but the award-winning recipes are now brewed under contract for the three venues and online sales.

From Thursday 15 September, Truman’s Beer will be known as Big Penny, following the acquisition of the trademark by the management team at the Old Truman Brewery announced earlier this year.

Cask at the Cleveland Arms - Bayswater, London. Pours clear, rich gold with a foamy white head. Lasting lacing. The nose holds bready malts, slight toasty brown sugars, some ripening fruits. Light to medium sweet flavor with balanced bready malts, berries, a bit of orange. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Great condition. Balanced finish, some bready malts, mello citrus, faint leafy bitters, plum, berries. Superb balance. An effortlessly drinkable bitter.

Cask at the Feathers, St James Pk, 03/10/13. Murky orange with a moderately sized off white head. Nose is toasted malts, orange, light hop presence, touch of grapefruit. Taste comprises citrus fruit, toasted malts, light strains of caramel, orange pith. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, light hop bitterness in the finish. So so, I don’t think this was in the best condition, certainly judgeing by the appearance, although it still drank better than certain other cask beers I’ve had recently!

Hoop & Grapes. Cask. Light haze on this gold beer, tidy white head. Palate is pleasantly crisp in that way only good cask condition can be. The malt is smooth and provides just a little sweetness. The promised US hops are here. Good citric bite with orange, orange peel and lesser lemon and grapefruit. Finishes with a mild to medium bitterness. The beer comes together very well. It’s well balanced for the style and the hops keep you coming back for another sip without burning you out. Very drinkable indeed and I had 4 pints of this cracking little beer.

On cask at the Haymarket. This one is really floral on both nose and palate. There’s the expected golden ale with creamy head appearance. Decently balanced and very drinkable.

Cask at Haymarket Bar. Pours pale gold with a thick, creamy head. Good lacing. Citrus and pine as you’d expect, some bread malt and hay too. Decent balance of sweet and bitter, and easy drinking. Nice pint.
