Description
Established 1666 - Closed 1989 - Re-established 2010 - Re-named 2022

One of the greatest names in British brewing, Truman's has been a part of London life for almost 350 years. Closed in 1989 during dark days for the brewing industry, we have been working hard to bring Truman's back to its former glory. We craft an eclectic range of great beer in cask, keg and can at our new brewery in Hackney Wick. Everything we brew, we do with with skill, belief and passion.

The brewery in Hackney Wick was closed in June 2022 but the award-winning recipes are now brewed under contract for the three venues and online sales.

From Thursday 15 September, Truman’s Beer will be known as Big Penny, following the acquisition of the trademark by the management team at the Old Truman Brewery announced earlier this year.

Full pint from cask at Pride of Spitalfields. Clear, dark amber body, creamy, off-white head. Spotty lacework. Smell of mid-sweet, earthy malts. Caramel malts to the taste buds with a vibe of roastiness joined by leafy hops. Mild malt-fruity bitter ending. Rather thin bodied. Average for the style (London, 05.11.2012).

Cask @ Highlander Inn, Craigellachie 210712
Light chesnut brown, clear, dense white head, some lacing
Aroma - some caramel malts, hint of toffee, touch of toasted malts, little on the nose
Taste as aroma with slight bitter mineral, more toasted malts, light fruits, rather bland
Palate - soft carb, thinnish body, slight creamy texture. Finish as main flavour, some bitterness, there’s no complexity to the finish as the brewer description states
Overall - Inoffensive rather run-of-the-mill bitter.

Cask at The Pride of Spitalfields, London. Pours clear yellow with a fine, white cream head. Lightly toasted, doughy malt nose. Sweet flavor with some faint caramel and berries, mild bread, very light leafy bitterness. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly sweet to finish with some toasty sugar, light doughy bread, very mild leafy hops. An easy going sessioner. Somewhere between a golden ale and a bitter.

(Cask at Tapping the Admiral, Camden, London, 19 April 2012) Amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty nose with toast, nuts and dark fruit. Malty taste with notes of nuts, toast, caramel, dried fruit and a gentle bitterness in the finish. Rather thin body, with a certain malt sweetness. Decent and quite drinkable. (It seems to be brewed at Everards according to the Truman’s website, but if someone knows better, please correct me on that.)

Cask at The Prince Bonaparte, London. Pours clear chestnut with a small, creamy and then filmy white head. Has a pleasant, if light, herbal hop aroma with hints of pine and toast. Lightly sweet flavor, touches of weak caramel, dry leaves, light bread. Light bodied with soft carbonation. Fairly bland finish, somewhat dry, bit more leafy and herbal bitterness and just slightly tangy malts. I would guess this beer is a touch old given its condition, but it’s still alright.

Cask at the Antelope, London SW17, on 28th May 2011. Slightly hazy copper with offwhite foam head giving partial lacing. Sweet, caramel aroma, main taste is sweet with caramel, barleysugar, fruit squash. Citrus lemon and rust notes later. Finish metallic and citrusy, on a mouthfeel that I found to be smooth but rather chalky.
