Description
Established 1666 - Closed 1989 - Re-established 2010 - Re-named 2022

One of the greatest names in British brewing, Truman's has been a part of London life for almost 350 years. Closed in 1989 during dark days for the brewing industry, we have been working hard to bring Truman's back to its former glory. We craft an eclectic range of great beer in cask, keg and can at our new brewery in Hackney Wick. Everything we brew, we do with with skill, belief and passion.

The brewery in Hackney Wick was closed in June 2022 but the award-winning recipes are now brewed under contract for the three venues and online sales.

From Thursday 15 September, Truman’s Beer will be known as Big Penny, following the acquisition of the trademark by the management team at the Old Truman Brewery announced earlier this year.

Cask in a pub somewhere in Shoreditch on the way to a Parquet Courts gig. The place stank of varnish or pain thinner or something. The new Truman set up seems to have taken over the couple of pumps available in here...still can’t remember the name of the place..pretty sure a member of the animal kingdom was involved in the title. Anyway, enough waffle- Amber pour with a white head. Bit of citrus in the nose (hard to detect it through the bloody varnish smell permeating the place). Vanilla and citrus flavour. Light bitter finish. Not bad.

Cask at the Defectors Weld, Shepherds Bush. Amber-chestnut with a moderate off-white head. Caramel, chocolate, dry leaves, a touch of smoke and a sprinkle of spice. Sweet with a mildly dry finish. Tough enough to stand up for itself directly after a US IPA, and pretty pleasant to finish the night on, but maybe a little too sweet to session on.

Cask at the Cambridge, Nicholson’s - Soho, London. Pours clear, bright gold with a creamy white head. The aroma has doughy white bread, some tangy citrus. Light to medium sweet flavor with simple pale malts, cereal, grains, hay, wet straw, lemon rind. Light bodied with fine carbonation and creamy texture. Sweet finish with marginal bitter straw, faint plastic, tangy lemon and white bread. Mediocre stuff, really.

Gravity cask at the Bree Louise - London. Pours clear yellow with a creamy white head. Basic pale malts in the nose, some dry lemon and hay, too. Light sweet flavor with a decent citrus component, lemon and tangerine, a bit of dry hay bitterness, pale bread. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Good condition. Balanced finish with further lemony hops, dried pale malts, light mango. Good effort overall. Quite drinkable. (November 2013, Score: 3.7)

Cask at the Wandsworth Common July 2013 beer festival. Pours clear gold with a creamy, white head. Bready, doughy malt aroma with light yeasty notes. Light sweet flavor with some buttery and doughy bread, light bitter straw. Light bodied with fine carbonation; good condition. Nice finish with further dry dough and bitter straw. Nice, if a bit simplistic. (July 2013, Score: 3.5)

Cask pint, as Truman Swift Golden Ale, at The Tabard, Turnham Green, Chiswick - a nice Taylor-Walker pub. ABV was 3.9%. Served at cellar temperature. Deep golden colour, low white head, leaving some lacing in the glass. Moderate aroma, more malty than hoppy. Smooth flavour, medium malty with a hoppy bite in the finish.
