Description
At Brains we are proud to be Welsh & proud that we remain family owned.
Brains beers were brewed in the Old Brewery on St Mary Street from 1882 right up to 1999 when operating from such a tight city-centre site became unviable. Fortunately, the Cardiff Brewery behind Cardiff Central station was up for sale and Brains production moved to a new home. However exciting new redevelopments in the centre of the city have led to a further move and the building of the brand new state of the art Dragon Brewery in Cardiff Bay which was opened in March 2019.

Bottle on the train with some Monster Munch. My how my life has spiralled.... Anyway, a really sweet and malty beer with hardly any trace of hops. A bit too sweetly rich for my liking.

On cask up the White Lady.
Appearance - deep amber and clear with a creamy off white head.
Nose - plum going into prune with toffee and brown bread.
Taste - more plums, raisins and chewy malt loaf.
Palate - chewy texture, some sweetness and then roasty finish.
Overall - a bit gnarly but worth the persistence.

Cardiff Mini-break Beer#12. Dark clear amber coloured keg pour, and nice to find a Brains I've not had before! Crisp substitutes a little for the smoothness in its title, but it does have some of this. A hoppy ale in the main, its crispness once again helps mask a low strength, but it doesn't feel thin, weakish maybe. After quite a lot of different beers today this one suits me right now. Mild bitter finish.

Cardiff Mini-break Beer#11. Dark, not black, as some might expect. Has an interesting mix of bitter-sweet dark malts that provide lots of taste to what otherwise would be a slightly thinnish textured brew

Cardiff Mini-break Beer#5. Second beer in Wales, a local classic with an excellent hop-malt balance, but not quite the depth. I'm sure plenty is sold as a session beer though in these parts. Clear amber coloured, it has a lower-end bitterness. This is a re-rate for me from a decade or so ago.

[Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading.] A reddish copper coloured pour with a tight cream head; fruity aroma; tart fruity taste, but nothing recognisable- perhaps some pear and peach, then quite sharply bitter and warming. Unusual.

Cask at Picture House, Stafford. Pours deep chestnut with a medium sized foamy off-white head and excellent lacing. It has a fruity aroma with some old school hops. In the mouth it starts off sweet and malty but very quickly there is a little bitterness and autumn fruits. Later there are traces of bitter hops, raisins and roasted grains. Bitterness lasts into the finish. This is decent.
