Description
Big Sky Brewing Company was started by Neal Leathers, Bjorn Nabozney, and Brad Robinson. Brad and Neal had been homebrewers in Michigan since the mid 1980’s, and had moved to Missoula with a group of friends in the summer of 1990. In 1993 they started to set up a brewery. After about a year and a half, Big Sky Brewing Company had enough cash in the bank and a large enough bank loan to begin purchasing equipment and renovating its original location at 120-A Hickory Street. We brewed our first batch of beer in mid-June of 1995.

The company was a draft only brewery (no bottled beer) for its first five and a half years. We brewed everything on Hickory Street, but we realized that to really become a regional player we had to find a way to put our beer into bottles. in early 2002 we broke ground on a new brewery on Trumpeter Way just north of Missoula’s airport. We began brewing in the new brewery in September of 2002 and started bottling our beer there in January of 2003. Since then, we have been where we always wanted to be, brewing and packaging all of our beer right here in Missoula.

Thank you tderoeck! 355 ml. bottle sampled @ Sebletitje’s Farewell Tasting. Bottle says 033116 - bottled on? Clear orange, off-white head. Nose is oily stale pine oil hop, bland old USA IPA, stlaer hops. Taste is oily basic malt, sugar, pine resin, stale old USA IPA, barn hay. Stale USA hop oil body. Still pretty decent but feels quite old, far older than it should at 6 months.

18/XI/16 - 12Fl. Oz. bottle from a trade, shared @ Seb's Farewell Tasting (Eugene's place) - BB: or bottled: II/31/16 (2016-1317) Thanks to Alengrin for the trade!

Clear orange beer, small aery irregular white head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: very fruity, pretty oxidized as well, lots of sweet ripe peaches, some caramel, lychees, more caramel. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: very fruity, soft bitterness, citrus, some grapefruit, lovely stuff, caramel. Aftertaste: malty, some caramel, sweet, lovely fruit flavours, very bitter, bit sweet. Still pretty darn good, despite the age on this one. Also: STATE TICK!

Sample from 2015 batch at Denver Rare Beer Tasting VIII on 10/07/2016. Jet black pour with a medium thin tan head that dissipates quickly to a film. Small patches of lacing. Oaky aroma with malt and chocolate notes. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky bourbon, caramel malt, chocolate and a bit of dark fruit. The finish is oaky with a bourbon and malt aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

12oz bottle. Hazy, unfiltered orange-tan body. Thin off-white head. Not that impressive of an offering. Oily, perfume hop tones, resinous and sharp. Antiquated, boozy, harsh. Bitter, phenolic hop tones. Lacks any modern sensibilities.

Bottle split at Craft Islo, thanks to Manny G, 04/10/16. Black with a decent tan cap. Nose is meaty, dark fruit rinds, spice, toffee, molasses. Taste comprises more molasses, treacle toffee, earthy, jammy fruit, chocolate, light spice. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a dose of warming alcohol. Decent enough well balanced impy.

Bottle: Clear, light yellow-gold with a thin white head. Slightly plasticky, lemon/grapefruit scent. Taste is astonishingly weak....dismal....watery lemon, grain malt. Really bad.

Craft Islington Gathering. Thanks to Manny G. Opaque deep brown beer, tidy tan head. Palate is smooth and semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Soft dark malts, some roast. Dark malt cream. Licorice. Dark chocolate. Soft dry finish. Decent. --- Beer merged from original tick of Ivan the Terrible Imperial Stout - Bourbon Barrel on 22 May 2011 at 04:47 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 8 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 8. A 2007 bottle. Opaque black stout with a thick creamy chocolate coloured head. Soft palate. Nose of wood, chocolate and faint bourbon. Rich smooth stout, no roastiness, bitterness or over dryness! Some barrel aged stouts clobber you in to submission. This one is a little more sublte and seduces with it’s well balanced but persistent soft creamy wood, vanilla, chocolate and coffee. Just a splash of bourbon that is seamlessly integrated. Nothing domintates. A very nice beverage indeed. Bottle 333/1152.
