750 ml bottle into snifter, 2012 vintage bottle 2843/3240. Pours moderately hazy deep ruby red color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with awesome retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of caramel, pear, apple, tangerine, orange zest, floral, toast, toffee, vanilla, oak, bourbon, light clove, brown sugar, and toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good complexity and balance of malt and barrel notes with a fair amount of hop presence; and good strength. Taste of caramel, pear, apple, tangerine, orange zest, floral, toast, toffee, vanilla, oak, bourbon, clove, light pine, brown sugar, and toasted earthiness. Light floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, pear, apple, orange zest, toast, toffee, vanilla, oak, bourbon, clove, brown sugar, and light pine on the finish for a while. Damn nice balance and complexity of malt and barrel flavors with a moderate amount of hops; with a great malt/hop/barrel flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a moderately creamy, slick, and lightly crisp/sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent barleywine style. All around great balance and complexity of malt, barrel, and hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Smooth and crisp malt with a slight hops snap. Clear amber with a small, but lasting foamy head. Hops linger on the palate. Some elements of caramel and gingerbread, although body is not heavy. A bit richer, but not a winter warmer.

Bottle, provided by Travlr, thanks Gene! Poured a clear nutty amber color with a light tan head. Aroma was some sweet, toasted caramel notes, some earthy notes to it too. Caramel taste, sweet notes. Pretty drinkable.

Pours pale golden with thin silky head and active carbonation in single stream (used a tulip). Aroma is sourdough bread and some tart citrus. Taste is mild bread, crackers and slightly flower (some Jujube’s thrown in for good measure). Finish is short and mildly dry. Closer to a wit than a weizen....

Rating from 2010: Sehr schönes Elch-Etikett, Bier mit dunkelbrauner Farbe. Der Geruch ist malzig-süßlich. Im Antrunk ist das Bier malzig-weich. Die Wässrigkeit verschwindet richtig schnell, zum Hauptteil macht sich eine angenehme herb-trockene Malznote breit, ganz leicht süßlich, aber nur kaum. Der Nachgeschmack ist lang, trocken und malzig, ganz leicht säuerlich und schön herb! --> tolles malzig-trockenes-herbes Braunbier! Einziges Manko: ganz leicht dünner Unterton, der mich aber nicht sonderlich stört. --> 13/13/12/13

Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, raisin, fig, apple, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, light chocolate, light roast, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of big caramel, raisin, fig, apple, toast, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, chocolate, light roast, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of caramel, dark fruit, toast, toffee, chocolate, brown bread, brown sugar, light roast, and herbal on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of malt and yeast ester flavors; with great robustness and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy, moderately slick, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent scotch ale. All around great balance and complexity of malt and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

12oz bottle pours with a dark mahogany to copper body that supports a tan head of foam. The aroma offers up dark roasted malts, dark roasted coffee and earthy dark chocolate notes. The taste has a smooth mix of nearly dark roasted malts, coffee notes and a mild earthy chocolate. That’s about it. It’s pretty roasty but not really burnt either. Pretty nice.
