Description
Big Sky Brewing Company was started by Neal Leathers, Bjorn Nabozney, and Brad Robinson. Brad and Neal had been homebrewers in Michigan since the mid 1980’s, and had moved to Missoula with a group of friends in the summer of 1990. In 1993 they started to set up a brewery. After about a year and a half, Big Sky Brewing Company had enough cash in the bank and a large enough bank loan to begin purchasing equipment and renovating its original location at 120-A Hickory Street. We brewed our first batch of beer in mid-June of 1995.
The company was a draft only brewery (no bottled beer) for its first five and a half years. We brewed everything on Hickory Street, but we realized that to really become a regional player we had to find a way to put our beer into bottles. in early 2002 we broke ground on a new brewery on Trumpeter Way just north of Missoula’s airport. We began brewing in the new brewery in September of 2002 and started bottling our beer there in January of 2003. Since then, we have been where we always wanted to be, brewing and packaging all of our beer right here in Missoula.

750ml bottle pours a hazy brown with some frothy, white head. Nose has a lot of wet cork, some butyric acid, caramel, vanilla, vegetal. Flavor is boozy, sweet, lightly tart, more butyric acid, cardboard. Way gone.

2012 Vintage // Bottle 1126 of 3240: Rich brown coloured body with a nice copper tint and a very thin tan head, all on top of a beautiful ruby and violet tint when held up to a light. Aroma of alcohol, oak, vanilla, brown sugar, cognac, whiskey and the strongest bit - figs. Medium-bodied; Relatively thin (for the style) with a big caramelised sugar flavour of pit fruits, toffee and just plain brown sugar. Aftertaste shows a good balance of malt, oak, dryness and the sugars with no bitterness at all, just a hint of alcohol bite, but not like most in this style. Overall, a nice beer that tastes more of a dubbel than a quadruple - but good, not excellent. Missing a bit of the carbonation and deep complexity, but this was nice. I’m glad I drank this after only a single year of aging, i’m thinking that in another year’s time, there will be no flavours at all - just mellowness. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased exactly one year earlier at Bottleworks in Seattle, Washington [state] on 10-February-2013 for US$14.99 sampled at home in the real Washington on 10-February-2014. Note that my bottle says 10% alcohol and is not the same as pictured - a different label and a caged top, not a swing top.

bottle at Ft Wayne tasting Sep 14 2013 - Pours light copper with no head. The aroma is of wheat, alcohol, and a vinous character. It’s sweet with obvious alcohol presence and fruity notes. Medium bodied with a dry, warming finish, it’s fairly good though kind of boozy.

Reviewed from notes.
The appearance has a dark brown colored body with a full foamy white two finger head that slowly dies to a cap, a lot of foamy ringy spider web lacing appears.
The smell has a nice malty chocolate-ness up front with a substantial amount of assorted nutty flavorings back it up. Some coffee notes come in as the beer warms.
The taste takes those smells and flavors it with a bit of maltiness.
The palate is about a medium with nothing harsh on the tongue. There is a dry aftertaste.
Overall, I’m really impressed with this one and would definitely have it again.

Bottle - black, fizzy pour, kind of looking like cola - aroma of cocoa, tobacco, light smoke, earth/mushroom, prune, light mineral - texture is a little watery, but the flavor is pretty good - moderate chocolate sweetness, with a balancing bright acidity that washes through the middle - a touch of earthy English ale yeast - finish is lightly bitter, with a touch of Burton-ish bite - pretty true to style robust porter - nice beer.

Shared at Kerry’s mini tasting. An orange gold pour with no head in a snifter but a thick head of foam in a tulip. The aroma is bready, cream soda like, lemon & honey. The body is medium-full, the flavor is herbal, sweet, smooth, smooth, orange, cream soda, pine, herbal, a bit of soapiness, good stuff. Interesting, like a cream ale not what I’d call a winter seasonal but well received.
