Bottle: Almost black with reddish spots, small brownish foamy layer; distinctive coffeeish - like fresh ground coffee or cacao powder - ,a bit fruity, a bit sourish-vinous nose; solid bitter-sweetish flavour, light to medium bodied; drier, coffeeish-bitter finish with a faint sourish-sweetish fruity touch. Half pint on gravity dispense. Clear golden body. Missing head. Cautious citric aroma. Balanced fruity taste with lemon, grapefruit and oranges. Bitter undertones in the ending (The St Albans BF, 29.09.2006)

Clear amber body with no head. Light malty to the nose - but very poor on aroma. Flavour has got some hints of berries and a not too pleasant grainy bitterness in finish (Half on gravity dispense at The St Albans BF, 29.09.2006).

Missing head, only a small layer over a very dark body. Light malty-sweet aroma. Very watered cocoa taste. Hard to discern anything else (Half on cask at The Dove Street Inn, Ipswich 21.09.2006).

Cask at The Dove Street Inn Ipswich 21 Sep 06. Pitch black. A tiny head that disappeared completely. Rather unexciting. Unvaried aftertaste.

Deep golden colour, good carbonation to medium, white head. Toasted & herbal nose; toasted malts mainly, and (grilled?) artichoke, and a whiff of rancid fat or maize (=fatty acids?). Dry, malty taste, less toasted than the nose. There remains, however, a hint of racked corn flavour, maizeshoots-oil, that sits uneasy on something that is supposed to be Bohemian-style Pilsner. Retronasal I get some pineappleester. Light to medium bodied, slightly oily MF, leaving a sticky deposite on the old mucoses (as Bertie Wooster would have said). One question defies all other concerning this "Pilsner": IS it a Pils? What kind of yeast was used upon these Saaz-hopped worts?

Yellow foam, reduced to rim in seconds; completely deep dark brown. Chocolate nose (sweet but dark), Chinese oyster- and thick Chinese soy-sauce; bit of tobacco, and licorice. Very dry beer, with tobacco and ashy flavours. Virtually no real saltiness, maybe vaguely mineral. Gone the oyster connections. Sweetness is there, but suppressed, light bitterness. Surprisingly light body, bit empty even. Nice nose, then going down quickly. Why - seems this breweries’ hallmark? All the same, thanks for the set of rather unusual beers, Phil!

Hazy orange beer; small, very white head, with shards of lace. Beautiful grapey hopsaroma, even when it cannot vie with a Westcoast monster. Dry hoppy taste, going over in malt, with retronasal, alas, more decaying grain. Finish is plain hoppy bitterness, even mouldy cardboard. A flavour of dry hopsacks, with dried and shriveled orangepeels, is the best what remains. Dry bitterness, quite light, even empty beer. Terribly disappointing, because the nose promised oh so much more. I seemed a worthy British contender ofr the contemporary IPA. But if one could call many’s the New World IPA’s unbalanced, this one is utterly onedimensional, and weak to boot.
